WILLIAMSBURG, VA - William and Mary Head Football Coach
Jimmye Laycock announced the signing of 15 student/athletes to national letters of intent to attend the College for the 2002 season.
The 2002 class has a strong in-state presence, as seven of the 15 signees are from the Old Dominion. While there is a strong in-state flavor, Laycock's staff did attract student/athletes from a total of seven different states. Other than the seven from Virginia, the 2002 recruiting class features a set of twins from Delaware, two recruits from Maryland and one representative each from Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri and Washington, DC.
The Tribe will bring four lineman and four defensive backs to campus along with three linebackers, a pair of running backs, a quarterback and a tight end.
"We are very pleased with the group of student/athletes that we have identified and brought into the program", says Laycock, a veteran of 22 seasons on the Tribe's sidelines. "I think it is an outstanding class that will make solid contributions to the squad for the next four or five years."
With a core of 15 players returning with starting experience from a 2001 squad that turned in an 8-4 record, captured a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference crown and made an NCAA Playoff appearance, the Tribe figures to enter the season ranked as one of the nation's premier programs.
Headlining the Tribe attack that averaged better than 30 points and 415 yds/gm of total offense in 2001 will be all-conference performers
David Corley (QB),
Dwight Beard (OT) and
Rich Musinski (WR). While the defense will be spearheaded by standout veterans like inside linebacker Mohammed Youssofi and all-conference safety
Marques Bobo.
