SOUTH BEND, IN - On the third day of the Tom Fallon Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, the William and Mary men's tennis team swept the three doubles matches it played and added six singles wins in matches against Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State.
Playing especially well for the Tribe was freshman
Sean Kelleher (Forty Fort, PA), who won all three of his matches on the day. In singles Kelleher defeated Purdue's Carl McCafferty in two sets (6-4, 6-2), but needed a third set super tiebreaker to take down Ben Cox (Michigan), 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-8). In doubles Kelleher joined
Geoffrey Russell (Phoenix, AZ), in winning against Adam Hourani and Goran Topalo (Michigan State), 8-3.
Also in doubles, the Tribe's
Joe Brooks (Hagerstown, MD) and
Jeffrey Kader (Geneva, OH) won against Chris Mitchell/Jimmy McGuire (Michigan State), 8-5. W&M's
Alexander Fish (Braintree, MA) and
Zack Malmgren (Cibalo, TX) defeated Josh Efros/Mike Jonckheere (Michigan State), 8-5. Earlier in the day Kader defeated Michigan's Greg Novak, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), while Malmgren won an abbreviated match with Chris Rolf (Michigan State), 4-2, ret.
Kelleher leads the Tribe this season in both singles (9) and doubles (5) wins. W&M's Russell improved his career doubles record to 30-12, giving him the best career doubles winning percentage (.714) in school history.
William and Mary concludes its play in the tournament today, September 30, with singles and doubles matches against Harvard. Also participating in the four day event are individuals from Ball State, Indiana State, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Rice and Wisconsin.
