WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The College of William and Mary's 17th-ranked football squad had 10 student/athletes earn a total of 11 all-conference honors when the All-Atlantic 10 Football Conference announced its all-conference squads Wednesday afternoon.
Leading the way was the College's lone two first-team selections, sophomore wide receiver
Rich Musinski (West Pittston, PA) and junior offensive tackle
Dwight Beard (Shippensburg, PA). Musinski set the College's single-season reception yardage record at 1,242 on just 54 catches. He ended the regular season leading the league in punt return average (17.1 yds over 17 attempts), receiving yards a game (112.9) and yards per catch (23.0). He was also second in touchdown catches, with 11. Beard has been a dominant force on the Tribe's offensive front all season and has consistently graded out amongst the team's top lineman. Beard has played a major role in helping the team to an average of 178.5 yds/gm rushing.
The Tribe's defense produced two second team honorees in defensive lineman
Chris Stahl (Norfolk, VA) and linebacker
Marty Magerko (Farnham, VA). Stahl, a three-time All-Atlantic 10 performer, enters Saturday's game having never missed a start in his 44 game career for the College. He ended the year with 82 tackles (41 solo) and recorded 11 QB hurries, defended three passes and recorded an interception. His 10 and a half sacks and 32 career tackles for loses is the top total amongst active Tribe players. Margerko was well on his way to being a serious challenger for the league defensive player of the year honors when an unfortunate knee injury severely limited his playing time over the past five games. Still, Magerko had at least one TFL in each of the first seven games of the season and had recorded three in one game on three separate occasions (at UMass and VMI and vs. UNH). Magerko also recorded double-digit tackles in five of the first seven games and ended the regular season as the team leader sacks (five) and TFLs (12) and was second in tackles with 88 (63 solo).
Offensively, the College's standout quarterback
Dave Corley (Columbia, SC) earned his third all-conference recognition by getting the nod to the league's second team. Corely QB rating of 151.5 ranked second in the conference and eighth nationally, while his average of 234.9 yds/gm passing a game ranked fourth. Overall, he led the Tribe to the 27th most passing yds/gm nationally (247.73) among I-AA schools. On the year he has thrown for 2,584 yards and 19 TDs, against just nine INTs.
Musinski and senior kicker
Mike Nagelin (Virginia Beach, VA) earned second team honors as specialists. Musinski was the conference's top punt returner, averaging better than 17 yards an attempt. He returned one punt 83 yards for a score vs. VMI and has been a consistent performer in the kick return department, averaging 18.7 yds/att. Nagelin, maintained the school's high standards in the placekicking department, ending the season tied for the A10 led in FGs a game (1.09) and points/game for a kicker (7.0). He started the season by hitting true on his first four FG attempts and his first 10 PATs, and currently has been successful on his last six FG attempts and 32 extra point attempts.
Two senior offensive contributors earned their first all-conference accolades, as TE
Brandon Johnson (St. Charles, VA) and center
Scott Tompkins (Wilmington, DE), were named to the A10's Third Team offensive unit. Johnson has quietly posted solid numbers, as he contributed 13 catches on the season for 197 yards and three TDs. Tompkins was the signal caller on the Tribe's offensive line that powered the squad to over 426 yds/gm in total offense.
Fellow senior, DT
Chad Richards (Weyers Cave, VA) also ended his final regular season by earning his first post-season recognition by being named to the A10's Third Team defense. Richards was perhaps the Tribe's most quietly consistent performer on the defensive front. A starter since his true freshman season, he is currently tied for fifth on the team with 67 tackles and has turned in nine tackles for losses (-30 yards). Joining Richards on the third team is standout sophomore safety
Marques Bobo (Charlotte, NC). Bobo, who contributed a crucial game-clinching fourth-quarter interception vs. Villanova, ended the year as the team's leader in interceptions (four) and was seventh on the team in total tackles (61). He also turned in nine PBUs, forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble.
Voting for the three teams is compiled strictly from a polling of the league's coaching staffs.
