Marcus Kitts Named to Athletes in Action Roster for Jones Cup

Williamsburg - William and Mary men's basketball player Marcus Kitts was named to the roster for Athletes in Action, representing the United States in the 2008 William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan, beginning July 10. Kitts, who will be a sophomore for the Tribe in 2008-09, will be one of 11 players from NCAA Division I programs across the country to compete in the event for the 15th time since its inception in 1977.

The squad gathered in Xenia, Ohio for a six-day training camp, July 1-7, and departed for Taipei on July 7. Along with the slate of eight games in nine days, the team will perform numerous outreach activities, including basketball clinics and visits to a local orphanage.

The 2008 Jones Cup, Asia's premier international tournament held annually, will be the 30th edition. Other countries competing in this year's tournament include Australia, Qatar, Jordan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Egypt, and host Taiwan. Jordan won the tournament a year ago, while the United States finished sixth.

The AIA roster for the event includes Dane Brumagin (UMKC), Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia), Nick Graham (Washington State), Damian Long (Harvard), Jamel McLean (Xavier), Laval Lucas-Perry (Michigan), Stephen McDowell (Tennessee-Chattanooga), Wellington Smith (West Virginia), Brett Winkelman (North Dakota State) and Ben Woodside (North Dakota State). Kitts will be the tallest player on the Athletes in Action roster, standing 6-foot, 9-inches.

Athletes In Action is the sports division of Campus Crusade for Christ International. Dave Hannah, who desired to capitalize on society's great love of sports and utilize the platform given to athletes to reach the world for Jesus Christ, founded AIA in 1966. AIA's outreach range includes ministry to college and professional athletes and coaches globally across a great number of sports. International competing teams partner with in-country staff and other mission organizations to resource Christian ministry around the world.

Last season, Kitts appeared in 16 games off the bench for the Tribe and finished with season averages of 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest. He came on late in the season for W&M, appearing in 10 of the Tribe's final 12 games of the season. For the year, Kitts played 9.2 minutes per game and shot 58.6 percent from the floor. He scored a career-high eight points twice during his rookie season. The Holly Springs, N.C., native scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds against Montreat (Dec. 22, 2007), before tallying eight points and five rebounds at Towson (Feb. 16, 2008).

The Tribe enjoyed an exceptional season in 2007-08 as it garnered the program's first winning season in a decade and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship game for the first time in school history. The Tribe also posted its second straight 15-plus win season for the first time in 25 years. Head coach Tony Shaver was named the CAA Coach of the Year and was one of 10 finalists for the Hugh Durham National Mid-Major Coach of the Year.
