WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary field hockey returns to Busch Field this Sunday as it takes on Richmond for a 12 p.m. start.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Furthering its commitment to a first class and secure environment at home athletic events, William & Mary will implement the use of walk-through metal detectors at the entrances to athletic venues (both ticketed and non-ticketed events) beginning in the fall of 2025. This enhanced security method mirrors standard practice at most major professional and intercollegiate athletic events throughout the country and compliments the Clear Bag Policy already in place. Fans will proceed through metal detectors prior to having their tickets scanned or entering a venue for non-tickets events. Entrants will not need to remove items such as belts, cell phones, coins, jackets, jewelry, watches, wallets, shoes or other small objects. If additional screening is necessary, security staff will ask the individual to proceed to a secondary screening area, where they will be asked to divest themselves of certain items and pass through again until clear.
FIRST CAREER TALLY
Sophomore Lily Johnson potted her first career goal on Sunday against Georgetown, scoring at the 59:40 mark. The Tribe struck for two goals in the five minutes of regulation, nearly completing a miraculous comeback before falling 3-2.
She became the fifth first-time goalscorer for W&M this season, joining Hailey Haynes, Hayden Haynes, Kate Longo, and Emilia Rubel.
CENTURY MARK
Head coach Tess Ellis recorded her 100th career win on Sep. 4 against Longwood in a 5-2 Tribe victory. Ellis has guided W&M to a .500 or better finish in CAA play in 10 of 13 seasons since taking over prior to the 2013 season.
TWIN KILLERS
Freshman twins Hayden Haynes and Hailey Haynes both scored against Longwood for their first collegiate goals. Hayden opened the scoring at 12:27 of the first quarter before Hailey potted a goal at the 38:26 mark in the third to give the Tribe a 3-0 lead.
JOSIE LEADS THE WAY
Senior captain Josie Mae Gruendel paces the Tribe with seven shots and four SOG so far this year. She is tied for the team lead in goals along with Hailey Haynes.
HEAVY FIRE
In the season opener against No. 6 Duke, goalkeeper Alexandra de Jesus made 19 saves, the second-highest total of her career.
LEAGUE RECOGNITION
Gruendel was named to the Preseason All-CAA Field Hockey team as an honorable mention selection. The Matthews, N.C. native started all 17 games for the Tribe last year, scoring four goals with one assists and nine points en route to earning Second Team All-CAA honors. She paced W&M with 11 shots on goal, connecting at a .733 clip.
NEW FACES AND OLD
W&M brings in six freshmen this season along with a pair of transfers in Kate Longo (Indiana) and Caitlin Wong (Boston University). Twenty players return from last year's squad, including junior midfielder Anya Green, who scored two goals in the season-ending win over La Salle.
CAPTAINS OF THE SHIP
W&M will be led by its three senior captains in Gruendel, goalkeeper Alexandra de Jesus, and defender Mackinzie Brown.
BACK FOR ANOTHER GO
Head coach Tess Ellis returns for her 14th season at the helm of Tribe field hockey. Since being promoted to head coach prior to the 2013 season, Ellis has won CAA Coach of the Year four times and guided the Tribe to a pair of league championships in 2018 and 2023. The Australian begins her 32nd season at W&M this fall after serving four stints with the Tribe since 1993.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond is 4-2 this season, with both losses coming to top-10 ranked ACC opponents in Duke and North Carolina. Senior F/M Clara Larripa leads the Spiders with eight goals. Her 1.00 goal per game average ranks ninth in the nation.
W&M leads the all-time series 51-33-11.
