Francella’s Go-Ahead Hit in the Eighth Leads Tribe to Rally Over Charleston

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary baseball surged back to erase a five-run deficit, highlighted by a go-ahead RBI single from Kevin Francella in the eighth inning in a 7-5 win over Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

Zack Potts put together a stellar start for the Tribe (16-21, 7-10), holding the Cougars without a run over four innings. Potts retired the side in order in the second and fourth and got help from his defense with a double play in the third. He allowed just three hits and no walks.

Charleston (19-20, 10-8) broke open the scoring with a five-run fifth inning. In the bottom of the frame, Louie Bartletti broke up the no-hitter by Charleston's Jace Stancil and later came around to score on an RBI single by Kevin Francella for the Tribe's first run.

Charlie Richwine delivered a shutdown inning in the sixth as he faced the minimum.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tribe rallied for four runs to equal the score. Sam Kaczmarek started the scoring with a fielder's choice groundout to make it 5-2 before an RBI double by Bartletti cut the deficit to two.

After Matthew Kosuda scored on a wild pitch, Anthony Greco delivered the game-tying knock with a single to left field.

Tom Bourque took the ball after Richwine and put up scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, after a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, Francella came up clutch with a two-out single to score Bartletti and Witt Scafidi, putting the Green & Gold team ahead 7-5.

Bourque worked out of trouble in the ninth, stranding two runners on base to seal the win. Bourque was the pitcher of record for the Tribe, while Kurt Rogers took the loss for Charleston.
