Baseball Out-Slugged by Charleston in Series Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary came out on the losing end of a high-scoring affair on Friday night, falling to Charleston 16-10 in the series opener at Plumeri Park.

Jamie Laskofski broke open the scoring in the second inning with a two-out grand slam to put W&M (15-21, 6-10 CAA) ahead 4-0. All four baserunners reached with two outs.

Charleston (18-19, 9-7) was held scoreless in the first two innings before bursting for seven runs in the third, including a go-ahead grand slam by Payton Frehner.

The Tribe responded right back in the bottom half of the inning, plating five runs to retake the lead. Louie Bartletti started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a Connor Chavez sacrifice fly that made it 7-6 before a wild pitch tied the game.

W&M took advantage of a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt that allowed Witt Scafidi and Chase Ecker to come around to score, putting the Tribe ahead 9-7.

The Cougars matched that with five runs of their own in the top of the fourth. The visitors would tack on four more in the seventh to take a commanding 16-9 lead.

Scafidi added a homer in the bottom of the seventh, part of a 3-for-4 day as the Tribe catcher racked up seven total bases.

Charlie Seneker pitched 2 ⅔ innings in relief, holding the Cougars scoreless while racking up four strikeouts. The Green & Gold was unable to rally as it was held without a run over the final two frames.
