Baseball Topped by Elon in Series Finale

ELON, N.C. — A late-inning surge lifted Elon past William & Mary as the Tribe fell 9-4 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Latham Park.

In the first inning, the Tribe (14-20, 6-9 CAA) scored the game's opening run when Chase Ecker swiped home on a double-steal attempt, set up by Matthew Kosuda's single that put runners at the corners.

Zach Boyd was able to work out of trouble on the mound in the second, stranding the bases loaded. W&M would extend its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Chase Ecker and another steal of home, this time by Ryan Santangelo.

Elon (14-21, 6-12) got on the board in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly as Boyd exited after three innings. The Tribe got one back in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt as Connor Chavez drove in Sam Kaczmarek for a 4-1 lead.

The Phoenix surged back in the late innings, plating three runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles to go ahead 5-4. A grand slam by Gar Hindle in the eighth inning put the game out of reach as Elon took a 9-4 lead.

Elon's Sam Nomura was the winning pitcher while Mike Staiano earned a four-save. Tom Bourque was charged with the loss for the Tribe.
