Lax Set for Mid-Week Matchup Versus UMBC

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team will take a break from its conference slate when it plays against UMBC in a neutral site matchup at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Va., on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

A Look at the Tribe
W&M enters Wednesday's game with a 5-4 overall record and a 1-1 mark in CAA play.

As a team, the Tribe currently leads the CAA in fewest turnovers per game (13.0) and ranks third in draw controls per game (12.6).

Individually, Mila Millhouse (2.11) and Grace Walter (2.0) rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in goals per game, While Walter also ranks sixth in assists (1.5) and points (3.5). Additionally, Kate Draddy (4.44) and Taylor McCall (3.0) both rank among the league's top 10 in draw controls, while Jaylin Locke ranks tied for ninth in caused turnovers (1.33).

Having won five of its last seven games, UMBC currently owns a 6-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference action

As a team, UMBC 11th nationally in scoring defense (8.11) and 21st in ground balls per game (17.0).
 
Individually, Emily Knapp (30g, 8) leads the Retreivers in scoring, while Reese Macintosh (17g, 16a) and Libby Staples (14g, 14a) have also come up big offensively. Goalie Emine Luznar ranks second nationally in save percentage (.542) and seventh in goals against average (7.4).

W&M-UMBC All-Time Series
Saturday's game will mark the 14th meeting between W&M and UMBC, as the Tribe owns a 12-1 all-time record. W&M won the first 12 matchups before the Retrievers secured their first victory in the series last season.

Last Meeting vs. UMBC
W&M fell to UMBC, 17-10, last season in a neutral site matchup in Alexandria, Va. UMBC opened the contest with a 5-0 run and maintained at least a four-goal lead during the remainder of the game en route to securing the non-conference victory. Although W&M outscored the Retrievers during the second and third quarters, 6-5, UMBC closed the game with a 5-2 advantage in the fourth quarter. Anna Dawson led the Tribe with five points (3g, 2a), while Kate Draddy (2g, 1a) and Ainsley Huizenga (2g, 1a) added three points apiece. Draddy also totaled a career-best six ground balls. UMBC outshot the Tribe, 38-28, including a 22-19 edge in attempts on goal. The Retrievers also owned a 19-12 advantage in draw controls and held a 20-15 margin in ground balls. Both teams committed 15 turnovers apiece.
 
Last Time Out
W&M fell to Towson, 10-6, at Martin Family Stadium last Saturday. W&M utilized a 4-1 run midway through the first half to build an early 5-3 lead, but Towson limited the Tribe to just one goal during the final 38:49 en route to securing the conference victory. Finley Hoffman (2 CT, 4 GB), Nora Begley (2 CT, 2 GB), Jaylin Locke (2CT, 1 GB) and Molly Delaney (2CT) all came up big defensively with multiple caused turnovers, as W&M held Towson to just four goals during the first half and scoreless during the fourth quarter. With her effort, Locke moved into a tie for eighth on W&M's career list for caused turnovers (55). W&M outshot TU, 24-22, which included a 17-16 edge in attempts on goal. The Tribe also owned a 10-8 advantage in draw controls, which included a 9-3 margin in the second and third quarters, while it committed one fewer turnover (16-17). Taylor McCall led W&M offensively and scored five of the Tribe's six goals, while she also added a pair of draw controls. Kate Draddy led W&M on the draw circle and equaled her season high with seven draw controls.
 
Underclassmen Impact
W&M's freshmen and sophomores have scored 73.0 percent (73 of 100) of the team's goals this season, as five the Tribe's top six scorers are underclassmen.
 
Narrow Margins
W&M has won all three of its games decided by fewer than three goals this season, as it earned wins against Geoge Mason (14-12), Coastal Carolina (9-7) and Xavier (8-7).

Elite Effort
Freshman Mila Millhouse's seven goals in the win against Drexel tied for sixth in the Tribe's record book and marked the most goals scored by a freshman in the country this season.

Snapping a Streak
W&M's 13-7 win against Drexel on March 14 snapped the Dragon's eight-game winning streak in the series.
 
Impressive Defensive Efforts
W&M has limited four of its opponents to less than 10 goals this season – including three of its last four – and is 4-0 in those contests. The efforts mark the first time since 2023 that W&M has held at least four opponents to less than 10 goals.
 
Record Watch
Kate Draddy currently ranks second all-time at W&M in draw controls (174) and needs four more to break the school record of 177 set by Sarah Cipolla. Additionally, she has 34 career assists and needs seven more to move into the Tribe's all-time top-10 list.

Jaylin Locke is currently ranked tied for eighth at W&M in career caused turnovers (55) and needs just six more to pass Becca Hall for seventh.

Goalie Marin Wilhelm currently ranks 10th at W&M with 267 career saves and needs 52 to pass Lisa Dixon for ninth.

CAA Defensive Player of the Week
After helping lead W&M to a victory against Coastal Carolina, sophomore standout Sophie Busam was selected as the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week. En route to helping the Tribe limit Coastal Carolina to just seven goals, including just one score in the final 26:19, Busam totaled a career-high three caused turnovers to go with four ground balls.
 
CAA Rookie of the Week Honors
After posting outstanding performances, a pair of W&M standout freshmen have been selected as the CAA Rookie of the Week this season. Mila Millhouse earned the honor twice (Feb. 16 & March 16), while Nora Begley garnered the distinction on Feb. 23.
 
Big Margin
W&M's 20-5 victory against Longwood in its home opener marked the program's largest margin of victory since its 21-3 win at Stetson in 2013. Additionally, the Tribe's goal total marked the program's highest scoring output since 2022 when it earned a 20-15 win at Campbell, while the defensive performance marked the fewest goals allowed by W&M since 2020 when it defeated Old Dominion, 11-4.
 
Overtime Success
The Tribe has won four of its last six OT games dating back to 2019.
 
Academic Excellence
During the fall, W&M was once again recognized for its academic excellence as it recorded the second-highest Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) among all Division I public institutions. Lax helped lead the way and earned a 100% GSR for the eighth straight season. Additionally, 24 standouts were named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll during the fall semester.
