Late-Inning Barrage Lifts Baseball Over Lafayette, 10-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — After being held scoreless for the first six innings, William & Mary baseball exploded for 10 runs in the final two frames in a comeback win over Lafayette, 10-3, at Plumeri Park on Friday evening.

William & Mary (3-4) broke through in the seventh inning on a three-run homer from Matthew Kosuda that tied the game. The Tribe proceeded to score seven runs in the eighth in its highest-scoring inning of the season.

Lafayette (0-5) started the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run from Bode Grieve. The Leopards added another run in the third with a bases-loaded walk.

Both pitching staffs settled in from there, with neither side scoring in the middle innings. Freshman Jack Pye pitched well in relief for W&M, going four innings with one run and five strikeouts.

Lafayette went ahead 3-0 on another solo blast in the top of the seventh, this time from Boden Fernsler. Hank Lippman limited the damage, stranding two runners on base with an inning-ending strikeout.

That set the stage for the comeback. After a one-out double by Trey Christman, Louie Bartletti singled to put two runners on. Kosuda then delivered the big blast, tying the game at 3-3 with a home run to straightaway center.

Lippman posted a shutdown inning in the top of the eighth, retiring the Leopards' order in succession with two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jamie Laskofski would give the Tribe its first lead with a bases-loaded walk. Christman then drew another bases-loaded free pass before Bartletti singled up the middle to make it a 6-3 game.

The Green & Gold would bat around the order, adding runs on a hit batter, fielding error, and a pair of wild pitches to extend its lead to 10-3.

Lippman shut the door in the ninth to earn the win. Ben Waterman took the loss for Lafayette.
