Tribe Edged by Binghamton in Home Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary dropped its home opener to Binghamton in a high-scoring affair, 9-8, on Friday evening at Plumeri Park.

Matthew Kosuda started the scoring for W&M (0-4) in the second inning with a two-run homer. The Bearcats (1-3) responded with a four-spot in the third to take a two-run lead.

W&M wasted no time striking back as Jamie Laskofski started a rally with an RBI triple to drive in Chase Ecker, who led off the bottom of the third with a single.

After a Trey Christman RBI single tied the game at 4-4, Connor Chavez gave the Tribe the lead back with a sacrifice bunt to send Christman home and make it a 5-4 game.

On the mound, Jack Pye entered the game in the third and tossed 3 ⅓ innings with no earned runs, striking out three.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kosuda added to his RBI total with a sacrifice fly that made it 6-4 in favor of the Tribe. Binghamton got a run back in the sixth thanks to an error, but the Green & Gold responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as Charlie Iriotakis blasted a home run down the right field line.

The decisive blow for the visitors came in the seventh when Tim Hennig delivered a go-ahead grand slam to put Binghamton up 9-8.

Freshman Stephen Christopher pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen, shutting down the Bearcats in the eighth and ninth. However, the Tribe offense was unable to rally against Binghamton reliever Jackson Mitchell, who earned a nine-out save.

Mason Holloway was credited the win for Binghamton while Hank Lippman took the loss for W&M.
