BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The William & Mary football team earned a thrilling 30-27 comeback victory in overtime at Campbell on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback
Tyler Hughes scored the game-winning touchdown with a 6-yard run in the extra session after Campell (2-8, 2-4) converted a 23-yard field goal to open overtime.
W&M (6-4, 5-2) totaled 11 points in the final two minutes of regulation for force overtime, as running back
Rashad Raymond found the end zone on a 2-yard run with 1:51 remaining and Hughes connected with tight end
Haven Mullins on a 2-point conversion.
Linebacker
Jake Worthen then recovered
Sam Braidwood's ensuing onside kick, and
Keegan Shackford knotted the score at 24-24 with a 38-yard field goal with just 0:01 remaining. The game-tying kick was Shackford's third field goal of the afternoon as he also connected on a pair of kicks from beyond 40 yards (41, 47).
W&M outgained Campbell, 505-424, as the Tribe piled up 223 rushing yards and 282 passing yards en route to posting a season-high yardage total.
Defensively, the Tribe limited Campbell to just a touchdown in the second half.
In addition to completing 25-of-37 passes for 282 yards with a touchdown, Hughes also rushed for a game-high 120 yards and the game-winning score.
Raymond also came up big with 78 rushing yards on 12 carries with a touchdown, while running back
Tariq Sims registered a 7-yard touchdown catch late in the first half.
Tight end
Jackson Blee (5-50) and wide receivers
Armon Wright (4-63),
Deven Thompson (4-45) and
Damian Harris (4-42) also provided significant production through the air.
Linebacker
Luke Banbury totaled a team-high 12 tackles and a PBU, while linebacker
Harrison Johnson also recorded a double-digit tackle total with 10.
In addition to recovering the onside kick, Worthen recorded a sack and an interception.
W&M trailed 17-13 at halftime, as the Tribe scored on a pair of field goals by Shackford (41, 47) and a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hughes to Sims during the opening 30 minutes.
A 3-yard touchdown run by Campbell's JJ Cowan midway through the third quarter was the only score by either team in the second half until Raymond's touchdown run with 1:51 remaining.
Cowan led the Camels with 107 rushing yards on 12 carries with a pair of touchdowns.
W&M will wrap up its conference slate when it plays at Hampton next Saturday at 1 p.m.
