Football Cruises Past Hampton, 55-14, in CAA Finale

HAMPTON, Va. – The William & Mary football team concluded its CAA slate with a lopsided 55-14 victory at Hampton on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to extending its winning streak to three games, W&M (7-4, 6-2) secured a winning record for the fifth consecutive season and remains in contention for a NCAA Playoffs bid. The Tribe has won five of its last six contests and has posted the program's most consecutive winning seasons since the 1990s.

Hampton (2-9, 0-7) jumped out to an early 14-0 after scoring on its first two possessions, but W&M responded with 55 unanswered points to secure the conference win.

After allowing the opening two touchdowns, the Tribe held Hampton to just one first down on its next seven possessions. Additionally, W&M limited the Pirates to just 89 total yards following the opening two scoring drives – 40 of which came on the game's final possession.

Conversely, W&M scored on eight consecutive drives – including six touchdowns – after throwing an interception on its opening possession. The Tribe also found the end zone on a blocked punt by linebacker Stephon Hicks that he returned two yards for a touchdown, which tied the game at 14-14 late in the first quarter. It was his fourth blocked punt of the season, which leads the FCS and is just one shy of the FCS record.

Quarterback Tyler Hughes highlighted a number of impressive performances offensively, as he completed 17-of-20 passes for 207 yards with five touchdowns. Additionally, he rushed for 52 yards on five carries.

Running back Rashad Raymond led the rushing attack with 114 yards on 13 carries and a 50-yard touchdown – W&M's first score of the game – while wide receiver Deven Thompson recorded two catches for 73 yards with a pair of touchdowns, including a 54-yard strike that gave the Tribe its first lead at 21-14 early in the second quarter.

Tight end Haven Mullins, running back Tariq Sims and tight end Trey McDonald also recorded touchdown receptions. Mullins' touchdown was the first of his career.

Twelve different Tribe players recorded at least one catch.

Linebacker Luke Banbury totaled a team-high eight tackles, while cornerback Jalen Jones recorded an interception. Defensive lineman Ty Gordon also came up big with four tackles and a sack – one of four sacks and six TFLs for W&M. Linebacker Elijah Rainer added five tackles, a TFL and a forced fumble.

Wide receiver Damian Harris returned five punts for 99 yards.

Placekicker Keegan Shackford made both his field goal attempts (36, 20).
