JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - William & Mary men's basketball completed the sweep at the Jacksonville Classic with a dominant, 92-58, win over Abilene Christian on Tuesday night at Adams-Jenkins Complex on the campus of Edward Waters University.
Â
As a team, the Tribe shot 64.7%, scored 33 fastbreak points and 54 points in the paint. Defensively, W&M (6-2) converted 21 ACU turnovers into 21 points and held the Wildcats to just 38.3% from the field. The Green and Gold's shooting % was the best for the program against a Division I opponent since 2015.Â
Â
The Tribe put six players in double figures led by the 20 points from graduate student
Cade Haskins. The 6-6 shooter was 6-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. Junior
Kilian Brockhoff turned in a strong stat line of 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots, while classmate
Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi scored all 13 of his points in the first half and added three steals.
Â
Graduate student
Jhei-R Jones finished with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go with four rebounds and four assists. Senior
Chase Lowe and sophomore
Ryan Jackson, Jr. tallied 11 points apiece. Lowe added seven rebounds and five assists, while Jackson, Jr. pulled down six rebounds.
Â
The Tribe was one of just two teams out of the 10, along with UAB, at the Jacksonville Classic to finish with a 2-0 record.
Â
Tuesday's game did not start the best for W&M, despite the Tribe scoring the game's first four points. With
Reese Miller missing the game due to injury, W&M was down its top two scoring just 2:19 into the game when senior
Kyle Pulliam was forced to leave and did not return due to injury.
Â
The Tribe took control of the opening half thanks to a 15-5 run and took as much as an 11-point lead. Jackson, Jr. scored four points, including a lay-up off a fast-break pass from Brockhoff to give W&M a 13-8 lead just over a seven minutes into the contest.
Â
Brockhoff found Vahlberg Fasasi  for a cutting lay-up, and the junior forward completed the 3-point play. Haskins capped the run with five-straight points. His wing 3 from Vahlberg Fasasi put W&M on top 23-12 at 8:55 mark.
Â
A 9-3 Abilene Christian (4-3) run cut the gap to 31-27 with 4:16 left in the opening half. Yaniel Rivera and Christian Alston hit 3-pointers, while the Wildcats' leading scorer Bradyn Hubbard converted an old-fashion 3-point play.
Â
The Tribe led by seven, 39-32, at the half and put the game away in the second half, shooting 76.9% (20-of-26) from the floor in the final 20 minutes, including 17-of-20 inside the 3-point arc.
Â
A 10-1 run early in the second half extended the Tribe lead to 16. Jones (6) and Emanuel (4) combined for all 10 during the run. Jones sandwiched a pair of floaters around an
Jo'el Emanuel dunk to push the lead 49-37 and force an ACU timeout with 16:22 left. The timeout did not stop run as W&M converted back-to-back steals into fastbreak buckets to extend the margin to 53-37 just a minute later.Â
Â
A Rivera 3-pointer midway through the second half cut the Tribe lead to 64-52, before W&M answered with an 11-1 run as part of outscoring ACU, 28-6, over the remainder of the game. Brockhoff (5) and Lowe (4) combined for nine points during the initial run. Defensively, the Tribe held the Wildcats to 2-of-15 from the field and forced five turnovers.
Â
The Tribe held a 31-30 advantage on the glass and tallied 12 steals on the evening. Emanuel totaled eight points off the bench narrowly missing being the seventh Tribe player in double figures.
Â
Alston and Hubbard led ACU in scoring with 10 points apiece, and Hubbard added seven rebounds.
Â
