WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Juniors
Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi and
Kilian Brockhoff tallied career-highs and William & Mary shot 50% from the field in rolling its fifth-straight win, 88-75, over in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
Â
Vahlberg Fasasi scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Tribe on 10-of-19 from the field to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Brockhoff notched a career-best 21 points on 5-of-7 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and a near perfect 9-of-10 at the free throw line. The Tribe big man also tallied career highs of eight rebounds and five assists.
Â
W&M's five-game win streak is its first during the nonconference slate since 2017 and the longest since it won eight consecutive nonconference games in 2009. The Tribe's 7-2 start to the campaign is also its best since it was 10-2 to start the season in 2009-10.
Â
The Tribe led by as many as 12 in the opening half and 14, 43-29, less than two minutes into the second frame thanks to a Vahlberg Fasasi elbow jumper.
Â
ODU (3-6) cut the margin to as little as one thanks to a 15-2 run. Jordan Battle, who led the Monarchs with 24 points, scored nine of the 15 during the run, including the first six. After back-to-back 3-pointers from Zacch Wiggins and Robert Davis Jr., Battle's second 3-point play of the stretch cut the Tribe advantage to 49-48 with 13:02 remaining.
Â
The Tribe regained control and the 14-point margin thanks to a 21-8 extended run. Brockhoff found senior
Chase Lowe under the hoop for an old-fashion 3-point play, before graduate student
Cade Haskins canned a 3-pointer for six quick Tribe points.
Â
Vahlberg Fasasi tallied four in the paint and found
Jo'el Emanuel for a fast-break bucket to push the margin back to double digits just three minutes later. W&M capped the run with seven points in a row. Brockhoff knocked down a wing 3-pointer to start things, before Emanuel scored on the break. Defensively, Brockhoff made a steal that led to a fast-break lay-up for Lowe, giving W&M a 70-56 lead with 6:25 remaining.
Â
W&M led by double-digits the rest of the way, peaking at 16, 87-71, on a Brockhoff bucket with 1:09 left. The Tribe shot 55.6% from the second half to pull out win.
Â
For the game, the Green and Gold connected at a 50% clip (29-of-58) and was an impressive 25-of-30 (83.3%) at the free throw line. The Tribe dished out 20 assists on its 29 made field goals and outrebounded ODU, 39-27.
Â
Emanuel scored a season-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 6-of-8 at the free throw line. Lowe turned in a strong stat line of 15 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Â
After ODU scored five in a row to take its first lead, 5-2, on Davis, Jr. 3-pointer, W&M took control with a 13-2 run in the first half. Vahlberg Fasasi scored five-straight, before a Haskins left wing 3-pointer gave the Tribe a 15-7 lead at the 11:34 mark. Defensively, the Tribe limited ODU to 1-of-11 from the field over the five-minute stretch.
Â
LJ Thomas kept the Monarch afloat with six-straight points on driving lay-up, closing the gap to 17-13 midway through the period. The Tribe opened up a double-digit lead thanks to an 8-2 run. Vahlberg Fasasi scored four during the stretch, while Brockhoff's spin move in the post extended lead to 23-13 at the 8:21 mark.
Â
The Monarchs narrowed the gap to four, behind a 9-2 spurt. Drew McKenna scored the first six of the run, before a Battle fadeaway jumper closed the deficit to 31-27 with 2:31 left.
Â
W&M scored eight-straight and took a 10-point lead into the locker room. Brockhoff sparked the run as he and sophomore
Ryan Jackson, Jr. scored all eight points. The Tribe junior saved a rebound while leaping out of bounds straight to Jackson, Jr. for a lay-up, before scoring four in a row of his own. Jackson, Jr. converted a cutting lay-up from
Jhei-R Jones to stretch W&M's lead to its largest of the opening 20 minutes at 39-27 with 42 seconds remaining.
Â
Davis Jr. and Thomas each scored 14 points for ODU. The Monarchs shot 41.5% from the field (27-of-65), but where just 9-of-34 (26.5%) from 3.
