No. 13 St. John's Pulls Away from Tribe in Second Half

QUEENS, N.Y. — Behind a strong start to the second half, No. 13-ranked St. John's pulled away from William & Mary, 93-60, at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday evening. 

The Tribe (2-2) twice pulled even with the defending BIG EAST champion in the latter stages of the first half. The final time on a floating jumper from junior Reese Miller to knot the game at 28 with 5:42 remaining in the opening frame. 

St. John's (2-1) led by five, 39-34, at the half and scored the first eight points of the second half as part of a 27-2 extended run to pull away. The Red Storm shot 50% (20-of-40) over the final 20 minutes and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds, which it converted into 11 second-chance points. St. John's also forced W&M into 15 second-half turnovers and converted those into 24 points. 

Miller led the Tribe with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-5 from 3, and added two assists. It was his third-straight game in double figures and second in a row leading the team. Graduate student Jo'el Emanuel contributed eight points on 3-of-5 shooting to go with two steals and a blocked shot. Senior Chase Lowe recorded seven points and five rebounds, while classmate Kyle Pulliam posted eight points.

The Tribe remained competitive in the first half, thanks to seven 3-pointers, which contrasted with St. John's scoring 24 points in the paint. W&M's first five made field goals came from beyond the 3-point arc from five different players. 

An 8-0 St. John's run opened up a 15-6 lead for the home team just over six minutes into the contest. The deficit was seven, 26-19, before W&M pulled even thanks to a 7-0 run. Pulliam knocked down a 3-pointer before back-to-back fast-break dunks from sophomore Ryan Jackson, Jr., and junior Kilian Brockhoff tied the game at 26 with 6:11 remaining. 

After Miller's jumper knotted the game for the final time, Bryce Hopkins and Zuby Ejiofor converted consecutive lay-ups to put the home team in front for good. W&M pulled within three, 37-34, on graduate student Cade Haskin's second 3-pointer of the opening half, but a Hopkins lay-up in the final minute gave the Red Storm a five-point halftime advantage, 39-34. 

Hopkins and Joson Sanon topped St. John's with 15 points apiece. Dylan Darling and Oziyah Sellers each contributed 13 points, while Ejiofor rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points to go with five rebounds. Darling added five rebounds and three assists, while Sellers connected on 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Dillon Mitchell was a defensive presence for the Red Storm with three blocks and three steals, complementing his eight points.

Brockhoff added five points and five rebounds, while freshman Kaleb Spencer came off the bench to finish with four points and five rebounds. The Tribe dished out 15 assists on 23 made field goals and tallied eight steals on defense. 

The Tribe finished the game shooting 37.7% (23-of-61) from the floor, including 9-of-29 (31%) from 3-point range. St. John's shot 48% (35-of-75) for the game, but was just 6-of-28 (21.4%) from 3.  

W&M continues its road trip at Bowling Green on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from Stroh Center and the contest will be streamed on ESPN+. Tribe fans can tune into the Tribe Sports Network and the flagship station, The Tide 92.3 FM, with Jay Colley on the call.
