Football Concludes Season with 28-21 Setback to Richmond in Capital Cup Game Presented by C&F Bank

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary football team concluded its season with a 28-21 setback against Richmond in the Capital Cup Game presented by C&F Bank at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

UR (7-5) quarterback Ashten Snelsire scored the game-winning touchdown on a 14-yard run with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter.

W&M (7-5) had an opportunity to tie the game but was unable to pick up a first down on its ensuing drive and turned the ball over on downs.

The loss snapped W&M's three-game winning streak and was its first home defeat this fall as it finished with a 5-1 record at Zable Stadium.

Despite the setback, W&M concluded the year with its fifth consecutive winning season – the program's most since the 1990s. Additionally, the Tribe recorded a 6-2 in the CAA and tied for third in its final season in the conference.

Things looked good for W&M early in the contest, as it built a 14-0 lead at halftime after limiting UR to just 68 total yards in the opening 30 minutes.

Quarterback Tyler Hughes provided the first score on a 3-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, while running back Rashad Raymond also found the end zone with a 3-yard carry early in the second quarter.

However, the Spiders scored touchdowns on their first three drives of the second half en route to claiming a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter.

Hughes' second touchdown run, coming on a 7-yard scamper, with 11:11 remaining knotted the score at 21-21 but W&M was unable to pick up a first down on its final two possessions.

UR outgained W&M, 323-194, and registered touchdowns with all four trips into the red zone.

The Tribe also scored touchdowns on all three of their trips into the red zone but was 4-of-12 on third down.

Linebacker Luke Banbury led the Tribe defensively with 16 tackles and finished the season with 137 tackles – the most by a W&M player since 1988 (Kerry Gray, 143).
