WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary football team blocked three punts that resulted in safeties and scored a touchdown with a fake field goal en route to earning a convincing 37-7 victory against UAlbany at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After jumping out to an early 7-0 lead with a 5-yard touchdown run on a fake field goal by holder
Joey Tomasso on the game's opening drive, W&M (5-4, 4-2) added a special teams score later in the first quarter when
Josh Miller blocked punt went out the back of the end zone for a safety.
Stephon Hicks and
Xavier Dillard later added blocked punts that resulted in safeties early in the second quarter and midway through the third quarter, respectively. Hicks' block was his third this season, which leads the nation.
The three blocked punts and three safeties were both just one shy of the FCS records, while it marked just the fourth time an FCS team has recorded at least three safeties in a game.
W&M utilized a balanced effort offensively (267 passing yards / 175 rushing yards) and outgained UAlbany, 442-232. The Tribe was especially dominant during the first half when it built a 28-0 lead and outgained UA, 307-46.
Quarterback
Tyler Hughes led the Tribe offensively and completed 25-of-38 passes for 245 yards with a touchdown, while he also rushed for 52 yards on 11 carries. He completed passes to 13 different Tribe players.
Tight end
Jackson Blee totaled a career-high nine receptions for 78 yards with a 16-yard touchdown – coming on a pass from wide receiver
Damian Harris – while wideout
Armon Wright also found the end zone with a 21-yard score.
Running back
Rashad Raymond rushed for a game-high 76 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown.
Linebacker
Harrison Johnson led W&M defensively with seven tackles, a sack and a PBU, while linebacker
Jake Worthen earned his first career start and tallied six tackles with a forced fumble and a PBU. Cornerback
Trevon Cannon recorded his second interception of the season.
Punter
Carter Boyd came up big on special teams and pinned UA inside its own 20-yard line with three of his four punts, including two inside the 10 and one downed at the 1-yard line.
In addition to outgaining UAlbany (1-8, 0-5) by more than 200 yards, the Tribe held the Great Danes scoreless until the fourth quarter and limited them to just 3-of-13 on third down.
W&M also dominated time of possession (36:48-23:12) and scored on all four of its trips into the red zone, including three touchdowns.
With the win, W&M improves to 5-0 at Zable Stadium this season and is 10-1 at home during the last two years.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Campbell next Saturday at 2 p.m.
