DURHAM, N.H. – Although the William & Mary football team overcame halftime deficits in three of its four wins this season entering Saturday's contest at New Hampshire, the Tribe was unable to replicate its second half success versus UNH and fell, 34-24, at Wildcat Stadium.
W&M (4-4, 3-2) trailed by just a touchdown, 31-24, following a 27-yard field goal by
Keegan Shackford with 12:38 remaining, but UNH (5-4, 3-2) answered with a field goal on its ensuing possession and held the Tribe scoreless down the stretch.
Quarterback
Tyler Hughes led W&M offensively and scored all three of the Tribe's touchdowns on the ground, as he finished with 74 rushing yards on 14 carries. He also completed 19 of 24 passes for 204 yards.
Deven Thompson also came up big with a pair of catches for 83 yards, while
Rashad Raymond rushed for 68 yards on 10 carries.
Tariq Sims finished with 43 rushing yards on nine carries and hauled in a team-high six catches for 37 yards.
Luke Banbury led the Tribe defensively with 10 tackles, while
Justin Krueger posted seven stops with a TFL.
W&M jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Hughes punctuated the game's opening drive, which covered 82 yards on nine plays, with a 1-yard touchdown. His second score, a highlight reel 28-yard scamper in which he made multiple UNH defenders miss, tied the score at 14-14 midway through the second quarter.
Although 10 consecutive points by the Wildcats gave UNH a 24-14 lead midway through the third quarter, W&M responded with Hughes' third touchdown run of the game – a 6-yard score late in the stanza.
However, the Wildcats' pulled back ahead by 10 with a 48-yard touchdown pass from Matt Vezza to Caleb Burke, and Shackford's 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter was the Tribe's only other score.
Vezza led the Wildcats offensively and completed 17-of-23 passes for 280 yards with three touchdowns, while he also rushed for 99 yards on 15 carries. Myles Thomason finished with a game-high 130 rushing yards on 21 carries and a touchdown, while Burke totaled six receptions for 153 yards with two scores.
Although W&M's offense posted a balanced attack (204 passing yards/ 188 rushing yards) and did not commit any turnovers, UNH outgained the Tribe, 512-392 and converted six-of-11 third downs.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts UAlbany at Zable Stadium next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
