Big Second Half Propels Football Past Elon on Homecoming, 26-21

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary football team earned an impressive, hard-fought 26-21 comeback victory against Elon in front of a large Homecoming crowd at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Although W&M (4-3, 3-1) trailed 14-3 late in the second quarter, it charged back with 23 consecutive points en route to securing the important conference victory.

A pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Tyler Hughes to wide receiver Deven Thompson – a 16-yard strike late in the second quarter and a 39-yard score early in the third quarter – gave the Tribe a 17-14 lead that it would not relinquish.

After a safety, which came on a bad snap by Elon's (4-4, 2-2) punting unit, increased the margin to 19-14, W&M added another touchdown with a 6-yard scamper by Hughes late in the third quarter.

Elon drew within 26-21 following a 1-yard touchdown by quarterback Landen Clark with 12:03 remaining, but W&M's defense came up big on the Phoenix's next possession and closed out the victory with a 12-yard sack by linebacker Clayton Dobler on a 4-and-7 from W&M's 45-yard line with less than 2 minutes remaining.

With the win, W&M improves to 4-0 at home this season and has now overcome a halftime deficit in three of its four wins.

Hughes completed 19-of-25 passes for 190 yards with two touchdowns, while he also rushed for 30 yards with a score on the ground.

Thompson highlighted a group of nine Tribe standouts who recorded at least one reception and finished the contest with three receptions for 81 yards with two touchdowns. Wide out Damian Harris also came up big with four catches for 75 yards.

Linebacker Luke Banbury totaled a team-high 12 tackles with 0.5 TFL, while defensive lineman Justin Krueger posted seven stops, a sack and 1.5 TFL. In addition to his win-sealing sack late in the fourth quarter, Dobler totaled a career-high 2.0 sacks, while linebacker Stewart Harrington III also came up big with six tackles and a sack.

Safety David Roulley added six tackles with an interception and a PBU, as his pick gave W&M starting field position in Elon's territory and set up the Tribe's first score – a 22-yard field goal by Keegan Shackford.

Punter Carter Boyd pinned Elon inside its own 25-yard line with all six of his punts, including two inside the 10.

Elon outgained W&M, 345-319, but the Tribe posted a 249-184 advantage through the air and recorded three more first downs, 20-17.

Additionally, W&M scored on all three of its trips into the red zone and did not commit any turnovers.

Clark led Elon and completed 14-of-18 passes for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while he also rushed for a team-high 83 yards on 22 carries with a score.

Defensively, Kahmari Brown recorded 13 tackles with 3.0 sacks for the Phoenix.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at New Hampshire next Saturday at 1 p.m.
