WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis opens the 2025 dual-match season with a pair of home matches over the week.
The Tribe welcomes Norfolk State to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m., before hosting West Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. Both matches will be streamed on PlaySight.

Scouting the Competition
- Norfolk State, like the Tribe, will open the 2025 dual-match season on Saturday.
- The Tribe is 4-0 all-time against Norfolk State and the teams meets for the fifth-straight season in 2025. Last season, W&M downed the Spartans, 7-0, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
- West Virginia faces VCU in Richmond on Saturday before traveling to Williamsburg. The Mountaineers are 2-2 on the with wins over Duquesne, 4-3, and Morgan State, 6-0. Last season, the Mountaineer finished the season at 15-13.
- W&M and West Virginia meet for the third time in the last four season on Sunday. The Tribe leads the all-time series at 5-2, but the Mountaineers have won the last two contests, including a 4-1 win in Morgantown last season.
News and Notes
- The Tribe is 2-1 under head coach
Jessica Giuggioli in home openers, including wins each of the last two season. W&M topped Longwood, 7-0, last season and George Washington, 6-1, in 2023.
- W&M will play eight of its first nine matches and 13 of its 19 overall at home. The Tribe plays seven of its eight matches during the month of February in Williamsburg.
- Over her first three seasons, the Tribe own a 46-21 record under Giuggioli's direction, including an impressive 30-7 ledger in Williamsburg. The Green and Gold has own 24 of its last 25 home contests.
- W&M is the three-time defending CAA Champions having captured the league crown in each of Giuggioli's first three campaigns. The Tribe last won four in a row from 2015-18. W&M claimed 15 consecutive CAA titles from 1986 through 2000 and owns 29 all-time championships.
- Sophomore
Francesca Davis led the Tribe in singles wins during the fall, racking up a 10-3 record.
- Senior
Alessandra Anghel totaled an 8-5 singles mark during the fall, including her first career nationally-ranked win. Anghel topped No 91-ranked Melodie Collard of Virginia in three sets to advance to the round of 16 of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships.
- The reigning two-time CAA Player of the Year
Hedda Gurholt competed in a pair of national events during the fall, taking part in the ITA All-American Championship in September and the ITA Conference Masters Championships to end the fall. Gurholt is 78-32 in singles over her Tribe career and she ranks 12th in school history with a 70.9 singles winning %.
- The Tribe returns four players that were part of the program's doubles lineup during the championship season in 2024 (
Emma Fernald,
Ine Stange, Anghel and Davis) and four of its six singles players (Gurholt, Anghel, Stange, and Davis) from last season's CAA Championship squad. In fact, Fernald, Stange and Gurholt will have the chance to win four CAA titles in their four seasons on campus.
- W&M returns four All-CAA performers this season. Gurholt is a three-time All-CAA selection in singles, including a two-time first team pick. She also took home All-CAA doubles honors as a freshman in 2022. Fernald was an All-CAA pick in singles in 2023 and was a doubles choice in both 2023 and 2024. Stange is a two-time All-CAA honoree in doubles each of the last two seasons, and Anghel earned All-cAA accolades in doubles during her first season with the Green and Gold a season ago.
