WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary field hockey kicks off the 2024 season with a pair of matches on the opening weekend. The Tribe heads to national semifinalist and No. 5-ranked Duke on Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m., before hosting Richmond in its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
The season-opener at Duke will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, while the contest with Richmond will be available on FloLive.
Clear Bag Policy
William & Mary Athletics, in conjunction with the William & Mary Police Department, has implemented a
clear
bag policy that regulates the size and type of
bag that may be carried into W&M Athletics facilities during the 2024-25 year, including Busch Field, Kaplan Arena, Martin Family Stadium, Plumeri Park, and Zable Stadium. Information as well as approved and prohibited items is available at

Tribe News and Notes
- As a team, the Tribe was picked second in the preseason CAA poll by vote of the league coaches along with Drexel. Both teams received 28 points and two first-place votes and trialed only Monmouth, which won the regular season in 2023, with 32 points and three first-place votes.

Josie Mae Gruendel was one of seven players named to the honorable mention list.
- Last season, the Tribe won the program's second CAA title, behind a 3-2 double overtime win over Monmouth in the championship. W&M finished the season at 12-9 in 2023, including an NCAA Opening Round victory over MAAC Champion Sacred Heart.
- The Tribe had five players compete at the 2024 Senior Nexus Championship (NXC), presented by Osaka Hockey at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va., from July 14-16. Graduate student

Josie Mae Gruendel were among 144 elite collegiate and post-collegiate athletes selected to take part in the annual event.
- George enters her fifth season at W&M as one of the program's top all-time goalkeepers. She is seventh in Tribe history in shutouts (9), ninth in wins (23), 11th in saves (210), 16th in Save % (.712) and 17th in goals against average (1.87).
- Friedman was named a Third Team All-American last season after posting 24 points and eight goals and eight assists. She was also named to the All-CAA and NFHCA All-South Region First Teams. She came up big during the Tribe's post season run behind three goals and three assists over the four matches.
- The Tribe's Sunday opponent, Richmond, has a coaching staff with close W&M connections. First-year UR head coach Martu Loncarica spent two seasons (2017 and 2018) as an assistant coach for the Tribe. Associate head coach Chaney (Manganello) Eldridge, assistant coach Erin Menges and assistant director of player development Christie van de Kamp graduated from W&M.
- Duke leads the all-time series with W&M at 30-9-1, but the Tribe won the last meeting in Durham in 2022. That day, the Green and Gold notched a 2-1 win over No. 21 Duke. Last season, the Blue Devils, ranked No. 4 at the time, picked up a narrow 1-0 win in Williamsburg.
- The Tribe leads the all-time series with the Spiders, 51-31-11, including a 3-0 win at Richmond last season. W&M is 26-13-4 against UR at home.
- W&M's non-conference schedule includes five games against nationally-ranked opponents. The list of Tribe ranked foes includes No. 3 Virginia, No. 5 Duke, No. 8 Harvard, No. 11 Liberty, and No. 18 Old Dominion.
