WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball (22-10, 6-3 CAA) continues its road trip into the week, traveling to Durham, N.C., for a midweek matchup at No. 6 Duke (24-8, 9-6 ACC).
The Blue Devils are the Tribe's second ranked opponent of the 2024 season, appearing as high at No. 6 in the national polls, by Baseball America. The consensus top-7 team made a postseason run in 2023, reaching the Charlottesville Super Regional before falling to host Virginia in three games.
Last Time Out
In its most recent outing, the Tribe defeated CAA opponent Monmouth, 9-5, to clinch the weekend-series victory.
The offense combined for 10 hits, including three home runs. Senior catcher
Nate Goranson belted his fourth of the year and freshman
Trey Christman earned the first of his career, both solo shots.
Anthony Greco smashed a first-pitch, three-run homer in the first inning to take what would prove to be the deciding lead for the Tribe.
Reed Interdonato earned his second win on the season, improving to 2-0, and
Carter Lovasz's second save of the year was the 14
th of his career, tying him for second in career saves in program history.
National Numbers
W&M ranks among the nation's best performers, landing in the top 25 in eight statistics.
Most notably, the Tribe is No. 4 in the country in walks drawn with 213. True to the theme, W&M is also 18
th in times hit by pitch with 65 and 24
th with a .424 on base percentage.
Four pitching statistics appear on the list, including a No. 13 earned run average of 3.83. The Tribe's 7.62 hits allowed per nine innings ranks 14
th while the 1.29 team WHIP is 17
th. Rounding out the top-25 marks is the 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings, which lands at No. 23. Also a conference-leading mark is the No. 28 strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.61.
Midseason All-American
Nate Knowles was named to the Perfect Game Midseason All-America Third Team as a starting pitcher. His 1.60 ERA is ranked sixth in the nation and he leads the CAA with the mark. Also among the nation's top numbers, his 5.49 hits per nine innings is No. 20 and his 13.27 strikeouts per nine innings ranks No. 28.
Knowles appeared in D1Baseball's Week 6 Player Rankings, tabbed No. 48 in the nation among starting pitchers, jumping 92 spots from his preseason ranking.
Winning Weekends
The Tribe have not dropped a weekend series all year, taking at least two-of-three against all seven weekend opponents, sweeping a pair in the process.
Three back-to-back conference weekend victories have produced the Tribe's 6-3 conference record, tied with Charleston for the second-best CAA record. The pair trail Northeastern and UNCW's 7-2 records.
Fifth Year Firepower
Not only did fifth year outfielder
Joe Delossantos extend his hitting streak to eight games, but he also maintained his on-base streak through all 31 games he played.
He belted his eighth home run of the year in Friday's series-opening victory at Monmouth His three-run shot proved to be the difference in a two-run game.
The leftfielder is hitting a team-leading .362 on the season and paces the Tribe in RBI with 35. Delossantos sits at second on the team with 42 hits, 33 runs, 27 walks, a .486 on base percentage and .629 slugging percentage.
Double (Blue) Devils
This is the second time this season that the Tribe will face a team with the mascot "Blue Devils." Earlier in the season, the Tribe took on Central Connecticut State as the opening game of the Central Virginia Classic weekend. W&M defeated the CCSU Blue Devils, 8-3, as they look toward the Duke Blue Devils Tuesday.
The Series
In a series which stretches back to 1912, the Tribe trail the Blue Devils 12-21-1 all time. In the last five games, the Tribe have won two and in the last ten, they have posted a 4-6 record.
The teams have played once a year since the 2020 season, each contest taking place in Durham. In those four games, the Tribe have taken one – a 14-3 victory in 2022 during Head Coach
Mike McRae's first season.
15 games in the 34-game all-time series have been won by the visiting team. W&M lays claim to six of those victories.
