Lax to Host No. 9 Maryland on Wednesday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After earning an impressive 19-12 win against East Carolina in its last outing, the William & Mary lacrosse team will play the second of four consecutive home games when it hosts No. 9 Maryland at Martin Family Stadium on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Admission is free. William & Mary Athletics, in conjunction with the William & Mary Police Department, has implemented a clear bag policy that regulates the size and type of bag that may be carried into W&M Athletics facilities during the 2023-24 year, including Busch Field, Kaplan Arena, Martin Family Stadium, Plumeri Park, and Zable Stadium. A Look at the Tribe
W&M improved to 3-3 with a 19-12 win against East Carolina in its last contest and will play just three more non-conference games before moving into its CAA slate. Paige Gilbert leads the Tribe with 15 points (13g, 2a) after scoring nine goals in last week's matchups versus VCU and ECU, while she has also totaled 15 draw controls. Kate Draddy (7g, 6a; 29 dc, 8 gb) and Ainsley Huizenga (5g, 3a; 18 dc) have also come up big.

Scouting Maryland
Ranked ninth nationally, Maryland enters Wednesday's contest with a 4-1 record and owns wins against a pair of top-10 teams – Syracuse and Denver. The Terps lone loss came in overtime versus then-No. 16 Florida. Eloise Clevenger leads the squad with 27 points (7g, 20), while Shaylan Ahearn has totaled a team-high 25 draw controls. Defensively, Meghan Ball has recorded a team-high 11 draw controls to go with 13 ground balls and 14 draw controls.

Maryland leads the all-time series against W&M, 30-6, and has won the last 23 meetings.
 
Last Meeting vs. Maryland
W&M fell at No. 11 Maryland, 22-4, on March 8, 2023. W&M got on the scoreboard first and trailed by just three, 6-3, late in the first quarter, but Maryland outscored the Tribe 18-1 during the remainder of the contest. Sarah Cipolla, Serena Jacobs, Paige Gilbert and Sam Van Gieson all scored for W&M, while Kate Draddy registered an assist. Cipolla also tallied a team-high four draw controls. Defensively, Kathleen Cozzi totaled two caused turnovers with two ground balls, while goalie Marin Wilhelm posted seven saves in 30 minutes of action.

Maryland Connection
W&M Head Coach Colleen Dawson played collegiately at Maryland from 2008-11, helping the Terps to three consecutive ACC Championships and the 2010 NCAA Championship. The scholar-athlete also excelled in the classroom, where she earned ACC Student-Athlete Honor Roll recognition and was a member of the Leadership Group.

Vs. Ranked Opponents
Wednesday's game versus No. 9 Maryland will mark the second of four games against ranked teams on W&M's schedule. The Tribe fell at No. 18 Richmond earlier this season and will host No. 14 Penn this Saturday and No. 12 Stony Brook on April 11.   

Last Time Out
W&M utilized a dominant performance in the fourth quarter to earn an impressive 19-12 victory against East Carolina at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Although the contest was knotted at 11-11 late in the third quarter, W&M (3-3) closed the game by scoring eight of the final nine goals to earn the lopsided non-conference victory. Paige Gilbert led the offensive attack with a career-high six goals, coming on just seven shots, while Kate Draddy recorded a career-high 10 draw controls, which ranks tied for third in school history. Nine players contributed to W&M's season-high 19 goals, while five standouts recorded multi-goal efforts.

Balanced Attack
W&M has utilized a balanced attack this season as at least six different goal scorers in every game. Additionally, 16 different Tribe players have found the back of the net this season. 
 
Overtime Success
With the 12-11 victory at George Washington earlier this season, W&M has won four of its last five overtime games dating back to 2019.

Record Watch
One of the most successful goalies in school history, Elise Palmer is ranked seventh in school history in career saves (332). She needs 54 more saves to pass Carlen Sellers for sixth on the all-time list.
 
Caroline Hertzberg currently ranks 10th all-time at W&M in draw controls (104), while her 51 career caused turnovers is just one shy of moving into the program's all-time top-10 list.
 
Courtney Vasquenza is also closing in on W&M's top-10 list for caused turnovers with 38.
