Hawthorne has been a fixture at W&M for over four decades, first as a student-athlete in both field hockey and lacrosse. She graduated from the institution with a degree in physical education in 1980. Hawthorne returned to her alma mater in 1987 and served as the head field hockey coach for 26 years, winning 275 games and advancing to two NCAA Tournaments during that time. She moved into an administrative role in 2013, including serving as the Tribe's Senior Woman Administrator.
As a coach, Hawthorne named the CAA Coach of the Year on three occasions. She is a two-time Hall of Famer. Hawthorne was inducted into the inaugural class of the St. Catherine's School Hall of Fame and was named to the 2020 class of the W&M Athletics Hall of Fame.
