WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary field hockey scored two goals over the final 2:04 to rally for a 2-1 victory over defending Patriot League Champion and preseason favorite Lafayette at Busch Field on Sunday afternoon.
Junior
Josie Mae Gruendel tallied both Tribe goals off penalty corners in the final frame to lift the home team to its first win of the year. It marked her first career brace and the first for the Tribe since
Kellen Richbourg tallied two in the Tribe's 2-1 win over Delaware last season.
After Lafayette (3-1) scored the game's first goal with just under seven minutes remaining, the Tribe mounted its comeback. Off a penalty corner, junior
Mackinzie Brown sent a hard pass from the right side of the area to the back post where Gruendel redirected it into the left side of the cage to pull the Green and Gold even at one. It was Brown's first career assist.
The Tribe (1-3) continued to push forward, drawing back-to-back penalty corners in the final minute. On the second opportunity, senior
Eme Schmittel's initial shot from the top of the circle was blocked by Lafayette goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni. The rebound though spilled over Gruendel at the back post, and the junior finished it off for the game-winner. It was the first game-winner of Gruendel's career.
W&M turned it on during the fourth quarter comeback. The Tribe recorded five of its eight shots on the afternoon in the fourth period and four of its six penalty corners in the final 15 minutes. Lafayette out shot the Tribe, 11-8, on the day, but the Green and Gold finished with six penalty corners to the Leopards' two.
Junior
Alexandra de Jesus and sophomore
Emma Cari split time in goal for the Tribe. de Jesus made three saves on the afternoon, including two in the first quarter, while Cari had two stops in the fourth quarter and earned the win.
Lafayette opened the scoring the 54th minute. Catalina Rubel tallied her first goal of the season, collecting a pass from Olivia Krey and scoring inside the near post from the right side of the area.
The Tribe continues its homestand by hosting No. 5 Duke on Friday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on FloCollege.
