WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary field hockey suffered a 9-0 loss to No. 6-ranked Duke on Friday afternoon at Busch Field.
Junior goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus highlighted the Tribe effort, recording 10 saves over her three quarters of action, while allowing three goals. She tallied five saves in the fourth quarter alone.
The Blue Devils (3-2) opened the scoring with a goal just over two minutes into the game on a hard shot from the top of the circle by Madison Beach. Duke put the game out of reach with six goals in the second 15 minutes of the contest. Maggie Kondrath and Julia Boehringer each scored two goals during the stretch for the Blue Devils.
W&M's best scoring chance came in the closing minutes of the third quarter. Freshman
Alora Chappell generated a Duke turnover in the Tribe's final 25 and drew a foul while driving toward goal. The foul resulted in a W&M penalty stroke, but senior
Eme Schmittel's shot was stopped by Duke goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski.
Kondrath and Boehringer each finished with two goals and an assist for Duke, while Alaina McVeigh contributed two assists to go along with a goal. Beach and Ashley Stockdale had a goal and an assist apiece. Reagan Ciabattoni and Issy Carey added the other two Blue Devil goals, both coming in the second period.
