Lax Heads to No. 18 Richmond on Wednesday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After earning a 12-8 victory against Old Dominion on Saturday, the William & Mary lacrosse team will continue its season-opening stretch of contests against in-state opponents when it plays at No. 18 Richmond on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
 
The game will broadcast by ESPN+, while live stats will be available at RichmondSpiders.com.

A Look at the Tribe
W&M is off to a 1-1 start this season and is coming off a home-opening win against Old Dominion in its last outing. Kate Draddy currently leads the team in points (9), goals (4) and assists (5), whiles she has also recorded four ground balls. Sydney Witwer has also come up big offensively with four goals. Ainsley Huizenga has totaled a team-high seven draw controls, while goalie Elise Palmer has tallied 19 saves, a .548 save percentage and a 9.19 goals against average.
 
Scouting Richmond
Ranked 18th nationally, Richmond owns a 2-0 record after earning wins against Campbell and Old Dominion. Colleen Quinn leads the Spiders with 11 points (7g, 4a), while Alexis Morton has totaled nine points (5g, 4a). Caroline Murphy has also come up big with six draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

W&M-UR All-Time Series
W&M leads the all-time series against Richmond, 44-15-1. The series has been more competitive in recent years, however, as the Tribe posted a 36-1-1 record in the first 38 meetings.
 
Last Meeting vs. UR
W&M fell to No. 21 Richmond, 20-4, at Martin Family Stadium last season. UR scored the game's first 12 goals and owned a 13-1 advantage at halftime. Although W&M outscored the Spiders in the third quarter, UR regained control down the stretch to secure the non-conference victory. Sarah Cipolla, Serena Jacobs, Delaney Roth and Maresa Moyer all scored for the Tribe, while Caroline Hertzberg totaled team highs in draw controls (3), ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (2).
 
Familiar Face
UR Head Coach Anne Harrington played four years at W&M as a midfielder and is a 2007 graduate.
 
Last Time Out
W&M opened its home slate with a 12-8 victory against Old Dominion last Saturday at Martin Family Stadium. Although W&M led by just one goal entering the fourth quarter, the Tribe opened the final frame with four unanswered scores to build a comfortable 12-7 advantage with 3:59 remaining. The Monarchs added a late goal but were unable to get any closer than the final margin. Kate Draddy scored two of her career-high four goals during the pivotal stretch, while she also added an assist during the final frame. The Charlotte, N.C., native finished with a career-best seven points (4g, 3a) to go with three draw controls and a caused turnover. Defensively, Kathleen Cozzi recorded a pair of caused turnovers and equaled a career high with five ground balls, while Courtney Vasquenza registered four ground balls. Goalie Elise Palmer posted nine saves and a .529 save percentage.
 
Defensive Efforts
W&M has posted a pair of impressive defensive efforts to open the season and is allowing just 9.5 goals per game.

Looking for a Strong Start
As W&M opens its season looking for a strong start, it will do so with four of its first five games coming on the road. Additionally, the Tribe will play its first nine games in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
 
Seizing the Moment
During the last two seasons, W&M has posted a 4-1 record in games decided by just one goal.

Record Watch
One of the most successful goalies in school history, Elise Palmer is ranked tied for eighth in school history in career saves (318). She needs just five more saves to pass Kelly Berner for seventh on the all-time list.
 
Caroline Hertzberg currently ranks 10th all-time at W&M in draw controls (104), while her 51 career caused turnovers is just one shy of moving into the program's all-time top-10 list.
 
Courtney Vasquenza is also closing in on W&M's top-10 list for caused turnovers with 36.
