Field Hockey Opens CAA Play at Towson; Hosts #10 Liberty

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary field hockey splits a pair of matches this week between the road and home, including the program's CAA opener. The Tribe heads to league foe Towson on Friday, Sept. 15, at 3 p.m., before hosting No. 10 Liberty on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m.

Tribe News and Notes
- The Tribe is 22-10 all-time in CAA openers, including a 7-7 mark when the opener comes on the road. Under head coach Tess Ellis, the Tribe is 8-2 in CAA openers, including winning last year's league lid lifter on the road at Monmouth, 2-1. W&M has twice downed Towson in its CAA opener, topping the Tigers 4-0 in 2014 and 8-1 in 2016.

- The Tribe is 28-4-1 all-time against Towson, including a 4-0 win over the Tigers in Williamsburg last season. W&M is 12-3 all-time at Towson, but TU won the last meeting in Maryland, 2-1, in 2021.

- Liberty and W&M have split their previous four meetings. The Tribe defeated then-No. 6 Liberty, 1-0, in overtime last season. This is the Flames second trip to Williamsburg with the last coming in 2016.

- The Tribe upset No. 12-ranked Wake Forest, 2-1, in Winston-Salem on Sept. 1. It marked W&M's first win over Wake Forest since 1997 and its first in Winston-Salem since 1988.

- Friday's win over the Demon Deacons was the Tribe's 12th under head coach Tess Ellis against Top-20 opponents, including the fourth over the ACC. Last season, W&M topped three top-20 opponents, including No. 6-ranked Liberty.

- The win over Wake Forest marked the second-straight season the Green and Gold tallied a road win over a ranked ACC foe after topping No. 16 Duke last season in Durham. It marked the first time since 2003 and 2004 that the Tribe posted back-to-back seasons with a win over an ACC team. The last time W&M won two matches against ACC competition in the same season was 2001.

- Junior midfielder Pyper Friedman scored both Tribe goals in the win over Wake Forest. It marked her first career two-goal game and her first career game-winner. For her efforts, Friedman was named the CAA co-Player of the Week.

- Junior Sara Bartzen came off the bench against the Deacs and assisted on both Tribe goals. The helpers were her first two career points.

- Graduate forward Lauren Curran scored her 23rd career goal in the season opener vs. James Madison on Aug. 25. She is just three goals away from breaking into the Tribe's career top 15 for scoring. Against JMU, Curran attempted 13 shots, including 10 on goal. It was the second most shots for a Tribe player in school history and the most for a CAA player since 2017.

- The Tribe had four players honored by the CAA during the preseason. Senior Jayden Moon, who had a goal and an assist against JMU, and Friedman were among 12 players named to the Preseason All-CAA Team, while senior goalkeeper Maddie George and Curran earned honorable mention honors. As a team, W&M was picked third in the preseason CAA poll by vote of the league coaches.

- In January, Moon and Friedman were named to the 2023 U.S. U-21 Women's National Team and invited to attend the Junior Pan American Championship (JPAC) Selection Camp. Moon was named a reserve for the JPAC team. Friedman has become a fixture on the USA Field Hockey scene early in her collegiate career after playing for the U-21 U.S. Women's National Team in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland, in June of 2022.
