Tribe News and Notes
- Despite falling in its season-opener to James Madison, 4-2, the Tribe dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Dukes 24-18, including 18-7 in attempts on goal, and 11-3 in penalty corners. The 18 shots on goal were the most for W&M since 2019.
- Graduate forward
Lauren Curran scored her 23rd career goal in the season opener. She is just three goals away from breaking into the Tribe's career top 15 for scoring. Against JMU, Curran attempted 13 shots, including 10 on goal. It was the second most shots for a Tribe player in school history and the most for a CAA player since 2017.
- The Tribe had four players honored by the CAA during the preseason. Senior
Jayden Moon and junior
Pyper Friedman were among 12 players named to the Preseason All-CAA Team, while senior goalkeeper
Maddie George and Curran earned honorable mention honors. As a team, W&M was picked third in the preseason CAA poll by vote of the league coaches.
- In January, Moon and Friedman were named to the 2023 U.S. U-21 Women's National Team and invited to attend the Junior Pan American Championship (JPAC) Selection Camp. Moon was named a reserve for the JPAC team. Friedman has become a fixture on the USA Field Hockey scene early in her collegiate career after playing for the U-21 U.S. Women's National Team in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland, in June of 2022.
- Friedman will go head-to-head with her sister, Nat, when the Tribe and Demon Deacons square off. Nat Friedman is a graduate midfielder at Wake Forest and a three-time All-ACC and NFHCA All-Region Second Team pick. Their mother, Toni-Jean Friedman (Lisa), was a member of W&M's Class of 1987 and played both field hockey and lacrosse for the Tribe.
- Wake Forest, who is ranked No. 12, will be the first of five nationally-ranked opponents on the Tribe's 2023 schedule. W&M hosts No. 6 Virginia (Sept. 18), No. 14 Liberty (Sept. 17), and No. 20 Duke (Oct. 1), while traveling to No. 18 Old Dominion (Sept. 24).
- The Deacs lead the all-time series at 9-5, including a 4-1 win in the most recent meeting in 2018. W&M will look for its first win in the series since 1997 and its first win in Winston-Salem since 1988.
