SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – William & Mary standout men's gymnast
Aidan Cuy made history on Friday afternoon as he earned the USA Gymnastics Collegiate national title in all-around.
Cuy garnered national champion distinction with a career-high 78.45, becoming the fifth Tribe gymnast to win the USAG Collegiate all-around title (Jamie Northrup, 2003; Ramon Jackson, 2005, 2006; Derek Gygax, 2009, 2010; Daniel Potemski, 2013). Cuy's impressive performance ranks ninth in W&M's record book.
Christian Marsh also garnered a major award, as he was honored as the USAG Collegiate Senior Athlete of the Year.
Navy claimed the team championship with a 396.8 and was followed by Air Force (395.5), Springfield (387.35), W&M (382.2) and Simpson (360.5).
In addition to Cuy's national title, he and five other Tribe standouts advanced to Saturday's individual event finals – Cuy on rings (13.1; season high), vault (14.15; career high) and parallel bars (13.55);
Christian Marsh on pommel horse (12.7), rings (12.6) and parallel bars (13.7);
Samuel Smith on pommel horse (13.0);
Trenton Peazant on vault (14.35; career high; ranks eighth in W&M's record book);
Evan Sikra on high bar (13.15; third place; equaled career high); and
Mark Fu on high bar (12.9).
Additionally,
Malcolm Baytop (13.2) and
Will Harrington (13.0) earned spots as alternates on floor.
As a team, W&M posted its best score of the season on high bar (64.0).
The individual finals will get underway on Saturday at 1 p.m., as the top six scorers in each event will earn All-America honors.
