Having already earned its third consecutive winning season, W&M (6-4, 4-3) will look to retain the Capital Cup this weekend. The Tribe enters the contest with one of the nation's top defensive units, as it currently ranks fifth nationally in passing defense (151.4), eighth in scoring defense (17.7) and 11th in total defense (297.1). W&M has also been effective getting stops behind the line of scrimmage this season and currently ranks 16th nationally in sacks (25).
After opening the season with back-to-back losses, UR (7-3, 6-1) has won seven of its last eight, including five straight. Although the Spiders are averaging just 348.5 total yards per game, UR's defense ranks fourth in the CAA and is allowing just 333.1 yards per contest. Richmond's game notes are available at
RichmondSpiders.com.
Saturday's game between W&M and UR will mark the 134th meeting between the two schools in what has been traditionally called the "Oldest Rivalry in the South" – but may be more accurately described as the most PLAYED rivalry in the South. The all-time series is tied at 64-64-5. The teams first met in 1898, when Richmond blanked W&M, 15-0. Only three other Division I series have a longer history than W&M vs. UR.
