ELON, N.C.- William & Mary rallied to win an epic five-set match at Elon Sunday afternoon. The Tribe offense was on point with 64 kills, led for the second straight day by
Eleanor Stothoff who finished with a match-high 22 on .392 hitting.
After a slow start,
Kaitlyn Ferguson came on with five fifth-set kills to put the match away and finished with a season-high 15 on the afternoon.
Sabrina Malcolm hit .350 with 10 kills and added five blocks.
Elon took the first set behind a .286 hitting percentage. For the Tribe, Schwem had a hot start with seven assists and a trio of digs. The Tribe saw Malcolm set the tone at the net with four kills on eight chances, but it was not enough as the Phoenix took a 25-17 opening frame.
Elon got out to an early lead in the second stanza, taking an 8-2 advantage in the first 10 points. However, the Tribe would come roaring back and take a 13-12 lead midway through the frame. A pair of blocks from
Ryann Love and eight digs from
Anna Porter helped William & Mary hold the Phoenix to a .078 hitting percentage as the Tribe pulled away with a 25-18 win.
In the third, it was the Tribe getting out front early with a 4-1 edge. William & Mary hit over .200 in the set, holding Elon to .177 on the offensive as Love sent back three more blocks. Malcolm added four kills while Ferguson slammed five in the 25-20 Tribe win.
Stothoff smashed six kills in the fourth, but that was not enough as Elon led wire to wire in a 25-17 set that would push the teams to a deciding fifth game. The Phoenix offense came alive to hit over .300 in the frame.
With the score tied 3-3 in the fifth, Stothoff scored three straight kills to give the Tribe a 6-3 edge. A pair of kills from Ferguson would prompt another Elon timeout, putting the Green and Gold up 10-4. Stothoff's 22nd kill of the afternoon proved to be the match-ender as the Tribe hit an outstanding .296 in a 15-10 win.
Porter was outstanding, recording 24 digs in the five-set affair, while Love led the blockers with six in the match. Freshmen
Lindsay Kahren and
Kaitlyn Dunnigan both added season-high 11 digs.
Amy Schwem notched her first double-double of the season with 10 digs to go with a season-high 33 assists. Fellow setter
Emma Minnick dished out 20 assists in the win.
William & Mary will return home next weekend for a pair of matches with Stony Brook. The Tribe will host the CAA newcomers Saturday and Sunday for a pair of 1:00 p.m. start in Kaplan Arena.
