WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - Taylor Burrell led the way with 12 kills hitting .611 as the Tribe (8-5, 3-2) downed Stony Brook (5-9, 0-5) in three sets Saturday afternoon. William & Mary hit .286 on the day as a team in their fifth sweep of the season. The Green and Gold also improved to 4-1 at home, three of those four wins coming in three sets.
The Tribe did not trail in the opening frame as Burrell got off to a hot start with four kills.
Amy Schwem recorded 10 of her 17 assists in the opening frame and
Anna Porter had five of her 17 digs.
Sabrina Malcolm added three kills without an error while
Eleanor Stothoff,
Ryann Love, and
Maddie Meyers all had a pair of kills in the 25-21 victory.
In the second frame,
Lindsay Kahren began play with one of the Green and Gold's 13 service aces on the afternoon and the team never looked back. The Tribe took nine of the opening 10 points and had a lead as big as 11 in the 25-16 second set victory as Love's two blocks helped limit Stony Brook to a .048 hitting percentage. Overall, the Tribe had seven aces in the frame.
The Seawolves jumped on the Tribe early in the third to establish an 11-5 lead, but Burrell would take over in the finishing set. The graduate student hit .778 with seven kills and zero errors in the eventual 25-21 clinching stanza.
Emma Minnick dished out 10 of her 16 assists in the final frame while Porter had eight digs.
Meyers added three kills in the frame and ended with seven on the day, while Stothoff also added seven kills. Love had three blocks and Meyers, Malcolm, Stothoff, Burrell, and Ferguson would each add a single block in the win.
The same two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. start in Kaplan Arena as the Tribe will look for its first CAA sweep of the season.
