Strong Second-Half Not Enough in 3-1 Setback to No. 11 UConn

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – No. 16 William & Mary field hockey battled back in the second half, but in the end, No. 11 UConn picked up a 3-1 win at Busch Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies (6-1) scored on two penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes, including one just 40 seconds into the match, to take control early. Claire Jandewerth opened the scoring with a hard shot from the top of the circle, while McKenna Sergi batted in a saved penalty corner at the end of the first quarter to give the visitor a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes.

After UConn increased its lead to 3-0 just six minutes into the second half on McKenna's second goal of the match, the Tribe (5-3) picked up the pressure. In the 42nd minute, junior Jayden Moon carried into the circle and found classmate Mollie Schuma on the right side. The junior forward lifted a nice shot over the UConn GK and just under the crossbar to get W&M in the scoring column. It was Schuma's first goal of the season.

After attempting only one shot in the opening 30 minutes, the Tribe had six in the second half, including five on goal. Following its goal, W&M had five shots, including four on goal, in the fourth quarter to go along with three of its four penalty corners, but could not close the deficit anymore.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Maddie George was once against strong, finishing with 11 saves. Junior Allison Goodwin came up with a defensive save on a beautiful stop to deny a UConn chance in the fourth quarter.

The Huskies outshot W&M, 20-7, and generated nine penalty corners compared to four for the Green and Gold. Sophomore Pyper Friedman led W&M with two shots, including one on goal.
