HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 16 William & Mary field hockey suffered a narrow 1-0 setback at No. 25 James Madison on Friday night at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
James Madison (4-3) scored the game's lone goal in the fifth minute off a rebound. William & Mary goalkeeper
Maddie George made the initial save on a shot from the top of the circle off the Dukes penalty corner. Eveline Zwagner jumped on the rebound and lifted it over the Tribe goalkeeper into the upper part of the net for the game's only goal.
Freshman
Emme Schwartz made a big play defensively in the 19th minute. JMU's Tori Carawan got around George, who came off her line to stop the break chance. Carrawan's shot to the center of the goal looked like it would give the home team a 2-0 lead, but Schwartz got back to it to make the defensive save, the first of her career.
George was once against excellent in goal for the Tribe (5-2), finishing with seven saves.
Offensively, the Tribe had a number of chances off penalty corners, but could not find the back of the cage. The best chance came early in the fourth quarter, but senior
Lauren Curran's shot from the fight side of the area went just wide of the post.
