DURHAM, N.C. – William & Mary field hockey faced its third top-20 opponent on Sunday afternoon, and for the third time, the Tribe bested its higher-ranked counterpart. This time, No. 21-ranked W&M scored two third-quarter goals to top No. 16-ranked Duke, 2-1, for the first time since 2001.
For the second time this season, senior
Allison Goodwin provided the game-winner against a top-20 foe. After scoring the game-winner in OT against No. 19 Old Dominion to start the season, she notched the winner in the third quarter off a penalty corner on Sunday.
The three wins over ranked competition are the most for W&M since it had five in 2004. The Tribe is 5-1 to start a season for the first time since 2017.
The Blue Devils (3-3) led 1-0 at the half after a 1v1 goal from Logan Clouser in the 10th minute, but the Tribe responded with two goals in the third quarter to surge in front.
W&M pulled even the match on senior
Lauren Curran's fifth goal of the season six minutes into the second half. Off a Duke penalty corner, the Tribe defense quickly started the counterattack to the Tribe forward duo of senior
Lily Saunders and Curran. The former centered to the latter who spun around the Duke goalkeeper and finished with a hard shot from the penalty stroke spot.
The Tribe took the lead for good on a sequence of back-to-back penalty corners in the 44th minute. After her shot on the first corner chance was stopped, Goodwin cashed in the second with a shot from the top of the circle to put the visitors in front, 2-1. Sophomore
Pyper Friedman and senior
Tabby Billingham recorded assists on the penalty corner set up.
As she has all this season, junior goalkeeper
Maddie George once again came up big in goal. She finished with five saves, including a pair of key stops off a Duke penalty corner in the 53rd minute.
It looked as though Duke had tied the match up with just over two minutes remaining off a penalty corner. Kira Curland directed a Josephine Palde pass into the boards, but upon review, the officials ruled no goal and the Tribe picked up its fifth win of the year.
Duke outshot the Tribe, 17-6, for the game, but only put six chances on cage compared to W&M's four. The Blue Devils just edged the Tribe in penalty corners, 6-5.
