WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary field hockey team opened its season with a thrilling 3-2 double overtime victory against No. 19 Old Dominion at Busch Field on Friday evening.
Junior
Allison Goodwin scored the game-winner with 3:37 remaining in the final extra session after she corralled a loose ball at the top of the circle that was kicked away by ODU's goalie.
The contest reached extra time on an equalizer by senior
Sally Snead when she found the back of the goal with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation off a save by ODU's keeper.
W&M led for much of the game, as senior
Lauren Curran gave the Tribe an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. W&M held ODU scoreless until Delphine Le Jeune scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, coming in the 47th and 52nd minutes.
Junior
Maddie George nearly matched a career high with nine saves, seven of which came during the fourth quarter and overtime.
ODU held narrow advantages in shots (18-14) and penalty corners (7-5), while all five of W&M's penalty corners came in overtime.
