Red Hot Tribe To Begin Postseason Wednesday

ELON, N.C.- William & Mary baseball has all the momentum in the world heading into Wednesday's opening round of the CAA Tournament. The league's hottest team will begin tournament play at noon Wednesday as the four seed, taking on fifth-seeded Northeastern in a neutral site game hosted by Elon.

The Green and Gold return to Elon just four days after sweeping the Phoenix to close out an eight-game winning streak to cap off the regular season. The streak, the Tribe's longest of the season, featured a pair of CAA sweeps over Elon and Delaware and single game wins over Hofstra and Old Dominion.

Coach McRae's club (26-21 overall, 14-10 in the league) will have a tough task, opening the tournament with preseason favorite and 2021 league champion Northeastern. The 28-27-1 Huskies finished with a league mark of 10-14. Northeastern's 8-1 win over Delaware in the final day of regular season action clinched a spot in the postseason.

William & Mary took two of three from the Huskies in Boston this April in the second weekend of CAA play. Matt Thomas shined in the series going 6-11 with four RBI, and a homer. Ben Williamson was 4-8 with a double, while Zach Tsakounis picked up a win, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings.

Wednesday's game will be followed by sixth-seeded host Elon taking on third-seeded Hofstra. Regular season champion College of Charleston and second-seeded UNCW receive byes until Thursday of the double-elimination tournament.

Mike McRae may be in his first season at the helm for William & Mary, but the skipper is no stranger to postseason success. McRae won the MAAC Tournament as head coach of Canisius in 2013 and 2015. Last season, McRae was the pitching coach of a VCU team that won the A-10 and was a two seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tribe is looking to get back to the NCAA Championships for the first time since winning the CAA in 2016. The fourth-seeded William & Mary team was 8-7 against teams that qualified for the CAA Tournament with series wins over Northeastern, Elon, and UNCW.
