Bullpen Bolsters Tribe in 9-3 Win

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- Tribe freshmen Mike Weidinger and Carter Lovasz came out of the bullpen to toss 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball to help the Green and Gold to a 9-3 win over George Mason Friday afternoon.

Weidinger earned his first career win tossing 3.0 hitless innings, walking one, and striking out three, nad Lovasz gave up just one hit, walked zero, and struck out one man to pick up the nine-out save.

On the offensive side, David Hogarth, Mark Trotta, and Tyler Solomon each had a pair of runs batted in, while Ben Williamson and Max Winters would score twice.

After a scoreless first, Mason got on the board in the second. A pair of singles sandwiched by a hit by pitch and a passed ball would lead to an unearned run as the visitors took a 1-0 edge. The Patriots struck again with a pair of runs in the third as a two-out single gave way to a Connor Dykstra two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game.

The Tribe would get on the board in the bottom of the third as Matt Thomas ripped a two-out double off the base of the wall in left to score Trotta, but Thomas would be stranded at second keeping the score 3-1.

After Mike Weidinger retired the Patriots in order in the fourth, William & Mary broke through to take the lead. Ben Williamson led off with a single and later scored on a hit from David Hogarth. The Green and Gold tied the score on a Solomon double to right center plating Hogarth, and Solomon and Winters came in on a two-out single from Trotta to give the home team a 5-3 lead.

After another pair of scoreless frames from Weidinger, the Tribe would pad on the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Max Winters led off being hit by a pitch for the second time in the afternoon and later scored on a Cole Ragone walk.

Lovasz would keep Mason off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth, and the Tribe would tack on insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth. After a Williamson walk, Phil Conti would single. Williamson scored on a Joe Delossantos hit to center, and Conti scored on Hogarth's RBI single. Delossantos scored the third run of the frame as Tyler Solomon belted a sac fly to deep right making it 9-3 Tribe.

Lovasz would retire the Patriots in order in the ninth to secure the win.

UP NEXT: The two teams will continue the series tomorrow at George Mason before concluding the three-game set on Sunday afternoon.
