WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – No. 20 William & Mary drew a final-minute penalty corner, but couldn't net the equalizer at Busch Field on Friday night, falling 3-2 to reigning league champion Delaware. The Blue Hens scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including the eventual game-winner at the 58:18 mark.
W&M (7-5, 1-1 CAA) took its first lead of the game with just over 11 minutes remaining, as the Green and Gold earned a penalty corner after the original on-field call was reversed. Senior
Lauren Curran took advantage of the call, tipping the ball into the cage off an assist from junior
Allison Goodwin for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
After the Tribe goal, Delaware quickly began to push tempo. The Blue Hens recorded a pair of corners in the ensuing two minutes, but, just as she's done all season, junior goalkeeper
Maddie George was a force between the pipes. She notched highlight-reel-worthy saves on both plays before Julia Duffhuis broke through on Delaware's third consecutive corner at 53:02.
The Blue Hens (4-8, 2-1 CAA) continued to bring pressure down the stretch, but junior
Maddie McGaughey made a big-time defensive save with just under four minutes left to keep it a 2-all game. Unfortunately, that Delaware pressure ultimately found the back of the net when Noelle Sabbagh scored off an assist from Lia Becker with less than two minutes remaining.
Delaware's Duffhuis also scored a first-quarter goal, as did W&M sophomore
Pyper Friedman. It was the midfielder's first of the fall. The Tribe held a 14-13 advantage in shots, putting eight of those attempts on goal, while George finished with five saves.
