WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - A day after winning 3-0 against Stony Brook (6-8, 1-5), William & Mary (8-6, 3-3) was downed in five sets by the Seawolves Sunday afternoon in Kaplan Arena. The Tribe took sets three and four, but the comeback fell just short in the fifth frame.
Once again,
Taylor Burrell was electric for William & Mary leading all players with 20 kills with a .400 hitting percentage.
Maddie Meyers added 11 kills on .346 hitting.
Amy Schwem and
Emma Minnick dished out 25 and 23 assists respectively, while on the defensive end Anna porter led all players with 22 digs and
Ryann Love added six blocks. Schwem and Minnick both recorded a double-double with 11 digs.
In the opening frame there were three lead changes but the Tribe's .056 hitting percentage led to a 25-21 win for the Seawolves. Minnick had four assists and six digs in the frame while Meyers and
Sabrina Malcolm each provided three kills.
Burrell came alive with eight kills in the second set, and despite hitting .310 as a team, the Tribe could not prevail as Stony Brook used 22 kills to take a 26-24 set victory.
The Tribe showed great resilience bouncing back and leading wire to wire in a 25-22 set three win. The defense held Stony Brook to a .118 hitting percentage in part to a pair of blocks from Love. Burrell added four kills while Meyers contributed three without error.
The Green and Gold dominated the fourth frame, never trailing in the 25-14 win.
Kaitlyn Ferguson had four kills in the set as the Tribe hit .440 as a team. Once again the defense was outstanding in holding Stony Brook to .088 in the frame as Love and
Eleanor Stothoff each had a pair of blocks.
However, the comeback would fall short as the Seawolves took the final frame 15-8. The Tribe had seven kills as a team to Stony Brook's five, but the visitors held a .750 side out clip to help secure the win.
Next week the Tribe will look to bounce back as they travel to Greensboro to take on North Carolina A&T in a pair of matches.
