Northeastern Bests Tribe 3-1 in Conference Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- William & Mary took the opening set, but Northeastern won the next three to best the Tribe 3-1 in Kaplan Arena on Saturday afternoon. Lauren Merrill had a season-high 15 kills and Julia Brown (13) and Maddie Meyers (10) also delivered double-digit kill outings but the Tribe could not overcome a .150 hitting percentage in the loss.

The Green and Gold fell despite having seven more kills than the Huskies and six more service aces. However the Tribe was bit by errors, 33 on attack and 10 from the service line in the defeat.

The first two sets saw each team surrender a large lead. In the first, Northeastern had a 7-1 advantage but four straight service points from Anne Louise Seekford put the Tribe within striking distance and two kills from Merrill gave the Green and Gold their first lead at 9-8. From that point the Tribe cruised hitting .393 in the primary set to take a 25-20 decision.

It was Tim Doyle's team jumping out early in the second opening up a 6-1 edge and later leading 11-6 after a kill from Seekford. However the Huskies would not be deterred, tying the set 19-19 en route to a 25-22 win to even the match.

The third set was a tight one as despite hitting just .100 in the frame played tight defense but Northeastern took a 25-22 win. In set four, the Tribe's only lead would come at the 3-2 mark before the Huskies broke away for a 25-18 win to seal the match.

Merrill was the Tribe's bright spot on both sides of the net hitting .265 and adding a season-high four blocks. Amy Schwem went for a double-double for the second straight outing with career-highs in assists (47) and digs (13) and Anna Porter set the tone defensively with 15 digs.

Maddie Meyers just missed her first career double-double with 10 kills and nine digs while Seekford chipped in 10 digs and four kills.

Next Up: The same two teams will face off again tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. first serve in Kaplan Arena.
