School-Record 54-Hole Total Leads Men's Golf to Third Place Finish at the VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary men's golf wrapped up a record-setting season-opening tournament, firing a 4-under 284 in the third and final round to finish in a tie for third place at the VCU Shootout, played at the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course. The Tribe's 54-round total of 14-under 850 established a program record.

The day after shooting the second-best 18-hole total in school history at 10-under 278, W&M tallied the 12th-best single round at four-under. Richmond won the event at 20-under par 844 followed by VCU (19-under par 845) and Radford tied with the Tribe for third.

For the third-straight round, a different Tribe player led the charge and this time it was junior Trevor Binau. He fired a career-best 4-under par 68 in the final round. After starting with a par on his opening hole, Binau ripped off three-straight birdies on holes 4, 5 and 6, and his round reach as high as 6-under par before closing double-bogey.

His 4-under round ranks as the 18th-best single round in program history and the Tribe's third top-20 round during the VCU Shootout. Binau, who finished in a tie for 32nd with a three-round total of 216, did damage on par 5s over the three rounds, ranking second in the field at 6-under par. His total of 216 tied his career-best.

Junior Jimmy Taylor and freshman Logan Hunter were the highest individual finishers for the Tribe sharing 20th with totals of 3-under par 213. The scoring total ties both players for 15th on the Tribe's individual 54-hole list.

Taylor, who ranked fifth in the field in par-3 scoring at 1-under, shot a 1-under par 71 on the final day, making two birdies and just one bogey over his 18 holes. The total of 213 was a collegiate career-best for Taylor. One day after posting the best freshman round since 2016, Hunter posted a 1-over 73 on Monday.

Graduate student Ethan Mangum and sophomore Will Rieck finished in a tie for 53rd at 222. Mangum shot an even-par 72 on Monday, while Rieck closed out the tournament with a 79.

The Tribe's 14-under 850 topped the previous school-record scoring mark of 12-under 852 at The Invitational at Savannah Harbor in 2017.

W&M returns to action next week when it travels to the Davidson River Run Collegiate, Sept. 20-21. The event will be played at the River Run Golf Club in Davidson, N.C.
