WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — After excelling on the field and in the classroom, William & Mary football standouts
Andrew Trainer and
Carl Fowler were selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 First Team.
Both student-athletes advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballots, as the national honorees will be announced in late June.
W&M's starting left tackle for each of the last two seasons, Trainer earned second-team all-conference honors this spring after establishing himself among the elite offensive linemen in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Selected as a semifinalist for the 2020 National Football Foundation Campbell Trophy, Trainer was also chosen to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society. He also garnered distinction on the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll multiple times, earned W&M's Provost Award for academic excellence and was named Academic All-Big Ten twice at Illinois before transferring to W&M.
Trainer, who served as Co-Chair of the Community Service Committee at the Mason School of Business, earned his undergraduate degree in finance and recently graduated with an MBA.
Fowler, a team captain and three-year starter at defensive end, led the Tribe in sacks and TFL during the abbreviated season last spring. Additionally, he posted 36 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 6.0 TFL, three PBU and a fumble recovery during the 2019 campaign.
In addition to his outstanding play on the field, his academic accomplishments and leadership off the field have been outstanding. A CAA representative on the NCAA Football Student-Athlete Connection Group, Fowler earned CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll distinction and W&M's Provost Award every year of his career.
A Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) representative, he also serves as a board member for the Criminal Law Society and Public Service Fund.
Fowler earned his undergraduate degree in public policy and is currently pursuing a law degree with plans to become a public defense attorney.
