Box Score The William & Mary baseball team put up an outstanding defensive effort on Sunday at UNCW, but was edged late, 1-0. The Tribe moves to 12-21 overall and 9-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss, while the Seahawks improve to 23-16 and 7-8 in league play.
Neither team was able to capitalize against strong pitching outings by W&M's
Zach Tsakounis and UNCW's Luke Gesell until the sixth, when Matt Suggs belted one down the left field line and came away with a triple. On the next at-bat, Cole Weiss was able to single up the middle and score Suggs, before Tsakounis was able to induce a pair of fly-outs to end the inning.
That was the only score, the rest of the way, despite both teams putting together threatening situations. In the seventh, UNCW had two runners on with two outs, but Tribe reliever R
andy Prosperi got the first batter he faced to ground out to first and end the threat. In the eighth, Suggs reached on an HBP and was worked around to third, before
Ben Greenspon struck out the batter trying to bring him home.
The Tribe had a runner in scoring position in the ninth, as
Matt McDermott was plunked and then advanced to second on a groundout by
Mark Trotta. That's where it ended, however, as UNCW was able to get the final out at the plate.
For W&M, first baseman T
yler Solomon went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of singles, and
Matt Thomas added another base hit. On the mound, Tsakounis (2-3) went 6 2/3 with three strikeouts, while Greenspon added another strikeout in one inning of work. UNCW had five players each collect a hit, with Gesell collecting three strikeouts in eight innings and Ethan Chenault adding a strikeout of his own to pick up his first save.
William & Mary hits the road on Tuesday to face ACC-foe Duke at 6 p.m., before returning to Plumeri Park next weekend, May 7-8, hosting the College of Charleston.
