WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Fresh off Sunday's doubleheader split with Richmond the Tribe will travel to Charlottesville for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch at UVA Tuesday afternoon. The contest will be just the second midweek affair for the Green and Gold in the 2021 season.
The Tribe was able to take two out of three from the Spiders last weekend behind timely hitting and a strong bullpen performance.
Matt Thomas broke out going 5-11 in the three game set with two homers and four runs driven in.
Will Moore,
Garrett Newsome,
Jack Cone,
Matt Howat,
Jacob Haney, and
Justin Pearson were masterful out of the pen in the pair of wins.
Virginia will bring a 13-14 record into the midweek date with W&M but the Cavaliers are hot winning three of four games last week. UVA bested George Washington last Wednesday before taking two of three from Georgia Tech in Atlanta over the weekend. Virginia is 7-2 in non conference games this season.
Last year the Tribe dropped an 8-5 decision to UVA despite three hits from Matt Trehub and a homer from
Matt McDermott. Howat and
Randy Prosperi worked clean innings out of the bullpen in the 2020 loss.
In the 2019 meeting McDermott knocked in three and
Hunter Hart scored thrice to power the Tribe offensively in a 9-3 win over UVA. Haney combined with
Zach Tsakounis and Prosperi to shut down the Cavalier offense in the win.
Jack Cone and
Ben Williamson have been dynamic at the top of the order for the Tribe and proved difficult for opposing pitching. Williamson is hitting .384 on the season and is currently riding a 14 game hitting streak. Cone has reached base in 15 straight games and has seven multi-hit games to go with his .364 average.
Matt McDermott (6) and Matt Trehub (4) also bring hitting streaks into Tuesday's bout.
