The William & Mary men's track & field team opened the 55th Annual Colonial Relays on Friday, winning two events and placing nine men in the top-10 of their events. There is no scoring at the Colonial Relays this year, as opposed to years past.
The first win of the weekend for W&M came early, in the first track event of the day, the 110m hurdles. Redshirt-freshman
Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.) cleared the hurdles in 14.95 seconds to take the victory. Layton now ranks sixth in school history in the hurdles, and becomes the Tribe's first winner of the Colonial Relays high hurdles since Hall-of-Famer
Charles Dobson '75 won the 120y version in 1973.
W&M also picked up the win in the javelin, thanks to redshirt-freshman
Jared O'Riley (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada). O'Riley threw the spear 62.11m (203-9) to take first overall, and win W&M's first championship in the javelin since 2011. This is the second week in a row that O'Riley has won the javelin competition.
Other notable performances included in the 3,000m steeplechase, where redshirt-junior
Matt Frame (Alexandria, Va.) took fourth overall in 9:38.26. The long jump saw Layton finish in sixth place, with a jump of 6.22m (20-5), and in the 1,500m run,
Johnny Rogers (Vienna, Va.) ran 3:57.6 for seventh overall. In the 100m dash, grad student
Matt Chabala (San Ramon, Calif.) took eighth place in 11.30 seconds.
Redshirt-freshman
Jack Bunting (Summit, N.J.) was eighth in the 400m dash at 50.74 seconds, just ahead of grad student
Chris Rosales (Harlingen, Texas) who ran 50.97 seconds for 10th overall. In the final event of the day, redshirt-junior
Spencer Tsai (Eugene, Ore.) ran his first-ever 10,000m and took 10th overall, crossing the line in 30:25.23.
The Colonial Relays continue on Saturday, with events beginning at 11:30 a.m.
