W&M Men's Golf Wraps up CAA Championships in Fourth

The William & Mary men's golf team finished up play at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Tuesday, finishing fourth overall in the eight-team event.  The Tribe shot 878 (+14) for the week, including 298 (+10) in the final round.  College of Charleston won the team title with a conference-record score of 834 (-30), with Drexel in second at 857 (-7) and James Madison third with a score of 870 (+6).  The Cougars also claimed the individual title, with Zach Reuland shooting 203 (-13) for a five-stroke victory.

William & Mary's top finisher this week was grad student Preston Ball (Raleigh, N.C.), who finished tied for 13th overall at 218 (+2).  Sophomore Jimmy Taylor (Alexandria, Va.) was one stroke behind him in 15th overall, after closing with a team-best 74 (+2) on Tuesday.  Junior Matthew Feinstein (McLean, Va.) shot 223 (+7) for a tie for 19th overall, and sophomore Trevor Binau (Columbus, Ohio) matched his classmate Taylor with another 74, and improved to a tie for 27th overall overall at 229 (+13).  Freshman Will Rieck (Brentwood, Tenn.) rounded out the team effort in a tie for 29th, recovering very well from a tough second round to shoot 75 on Tuesday and finish at 230 (+14) overall.

For the season, the Tribe averaged a school-record 293.8 strokes per round, more than half a stroke better than the previous mark set in 2013-14.  W&M was also 30-23 (.556) in head-to-head competition.  Individually, Ball (73.47) and Feinstein (73.60) turned in the 10th and 12th-best season scoring averages in program history.  Rieck's rookie average of 74.56 strokes per round would rank fifth all-time among freshmen if he had played one more round (minimum of 10 rounds to qualify).
