William & Mary sophomore
Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.) completed the first half of the hepathlon on Saturday at the Mason Winter Track Fiesta on record-pace in Fairfax, Va. After four of the seven events, Layton is second overall with 2,451 points. That's 94 points ahead of his pace from the 2020 IC4A Championships, where he went on to finish fifth overall in a freshman-record 4,733 points. Using that advantage to project his second-day scores, Layton is on-pace to score a school-record 4,921 points.
Among the four component events, Layton's best performance came in the shot put, where he won the event with a personal-best put of 12.05m (39-6.5). he also took second in the long jump at 6.11m (20-05), and set a personal-best in the 60m dash at 7.43 seconds. The final event on the first day was the high jump, where he tied for third at a height of 1.64m (5-4.5).
The heptathlon wraps up on Sunday, when Layton will be joined by his teammates competing in the rest of the men's events at Mason Winter Track Fiesta, beginning at 11 a.m.
